Erratic idling TD5
Gdday,

2003 TD5
15P engine.
92453 kms

Two weeks ago did the injectors and washers no problem.
Did all the bits and bobs, primed it, started straight away! ...................Only

For some unknown reason, when it goes back to idle, for about 20 or 30 second it runs a bit rough, and then settles
down again.....
It drives fine, as normal.
Checked the pump, fuel filter and non return filter in housing, changed FPR, checked throttle pot, ambient sensor, crank
sensor........
Put Hawkeye on, nothing shows up...

For my own sanity I had the injectors checked at a local Deplhi agent, all injectors passed as OK.

For once..... I'm absolutely stumped Crying or Very sad

Any one else had this perhaps ??

Cheers Thumbs Up

I'll check the turbo today, but it seems really strange, as before I did the washers and seals it was running fine, other than
the oil level creeping up ....

The strange thing is, it doesn't do it all the time, just from say 7 out of 10 times ? Confused

I will check the wiring of the loom going to the ECU, in case perhaps it has "chafed" somewhere?

Are you sure it didn’t do it before?

Yup
It was running alright before then.......
Now it seems to be running rougher on idle, particularly when cold.
Strangly, when it settles down again, it runs fine Confused

When doing the "bump" clearance I was distracted and I got the lobe the round way wrong on nr. 4, and the adjuster screw
broke Rolling Eyes !
I put everything on hold until I got a new adjuster screw.
Replaced the screw, but nothing seemed untoward, when doing the "bump" clearance then.
Ever since then it has been occuring.
Checked if I cracked the head, i.e.no diesel coming out when I activate the pump, and no creeping up of the oil level.

Possible I have cracked the head perhaps ??
It's a 15P engine, so by all accounts it's a stronger head Surprised

I would double check what you have done, just in case something has come slack. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it!

The reason I asked was that I think it’s not unusual for the Td5 to do this.

You drive along then stop driving, engine sounds like it’s running on four cylinders for a brief time, then returns to smooth/five cylinder tickover.

Thanks boyz,

I checked more than once Smile for my own sanity, if nothing else. Laughing

Yes, exactly as you said Landy Andy that's what it does now, but it never used to Rolling Eyes
It sounds more like a bag of nails Laughing

I wonder if it is the fuel pump, not delivering enough fuel at idle, but I'm sure the FPR would regulate that Wink
Any thought.....
After all, I'm increasing feeling more and more of an idiot Big Cry

From what I remember, with a discussion with a tuner, it’s just due to the Td5 shutting down injectors to lower the tickover. It’s more noticeable when you engine brake. My old Td5 90 used to do it a lot and that got to 186thou miles, and went like stink.
I was just thinking you maybe listening more, and worrying due to your recent work, but it had always done it a bit?

Thanks Landy,

I know what you mean, when you notice something it plays on your mind Rolling Eyes .

Even the guys that work for me now notice it, and give me some stick for it Embarassed , as they are Nissan
and (blooming) Toyota fans. ( I HATE Toyota !! Big Cry )

I'll see if I can can make a sound recording and post that perhaps, so you can hear......

It seems to be worse when the engine is cold ?!?

Did you get to the bottom of this? Did you check for oil on the ECU plug?

I just got to the bottom of it Smile

It is a cracked head, strangly on nr. 2, not on nr.4 as I expected, due my own "senior" moment Very Happy

However I think may have been already cracked, as the "growing" oil has been going on for some time.

I have ordered a new AMC head, and it should be here by the end of next week I hope.
A bit dissapointing, as I haven't even reached the 100 K milestone yet.

We don't get the conditions here as in Europe, so my Defender has been pretty cosseted, and very much looked after Smile

Mind you first major spend since new, so as the saying goes : Censored happens Embarassed Shocked
