Before I changed the boss and steering wheel, the original had lots of play in it, so it wasn't noticeable...
When I changed the boss and steering wheel to optimil/momo, the steering wheel sat slightly 'turned' to the left... I took it off, repositions one spline over - then it was way out to the right... I fought over this for a few days in between drives, repositioning between the splines, but made no difference..

Ill have a look at the drag link.

If it’s only a spline out (or half a spline, hence trying to find a place between two adjacent positions) then you can fix as follows:

1. Firstly ensure tracking is correct, i.e. toe setting is as desired. I always set mind straight ahead so the front wheels are parallel with the rears. Some string is all that is required to do this.
2. Set wheels in dead ahead position.
3. Slacken the clamps or locknuts on both ends of the drag link*
4. Ensuring the wheels do not move, turn the drag link slightly to move the steering box drop arm left/right as required in order to tweak the steering wheel to the central position.
5. In theory this should also leave the steering box centralised (denoted by the slot at the back of the drop arm), though in practice if this is very slightly out it’s no biggie.
6. Ensuring that the ball joints both ends are in the ‘neutral’ position, retighten the clamps or locknuts.
7. Test drive. Repeat adjustment if necessary.

* If your drag link has not been adjusted for some time this can be a big problem, requiring removal from the vehicle and application of heat and oil to free it up on the bench. If in doubt buy a new ball joint for the axle end so that it can be sacrificed in this process.

Thanks for this, ill be giving it a go when I have a day free. Very Happy Regards
Adam

Installed Tuff Rok Stainless Steel extended brackets and mudflaps. Needed grinding in almost each of the old mudflaps. Bolts either snapped or just spinning. Very pleased with the end result.

The side steps replaced under warranty a year ago had been fitted with the bar that connect to the chassis upside down. No idea why. I spent an hour cleaning up the steps and spraying with ACF50, turning the bar the right way up, cleaning and spraying the tow bar and underside of the rear cross member. All good. Thumbs Up

I then found oil coming from the turbo to intercooler hose on my 300tdi - enough to leak and run down the outside of the intercooler. I tightened up the jubilee clip and had a wipe around. It is going in for the leak from output shaft on the transfer box in a few days time. As much as I love the old thing, it isn’t in my good books at the moment. Big Cry

First major breakage!
Well it had to happen some time, with an average of 20 hours of off roading at our Woodland course per week, and over the last year and a bit of work, we finally have a major breakage.

I had done 4 hours of customers yesterday morning, and towards the end of the last session, I noticed a vibration from the front end.

Nothing unusual in that, there’s normally so mud and clay inside the wheels they often vibarate. But this was a different type of vibration, much more mechanical.

Then 45 minutes into my last customer of the day, a nice University student called Elanor, we heard a very loud bang front the front , just as we were crossing the most tree route rutted part of the course.

The poor girl looked like she was going to burst into tears, but I assured her it was nothing to do wirh her driving.,

So we were in the low box, I took over trying to drive out, but we had no drive,

Had a look underneath to see what might b wrong, but as you can see from the picture it was too deep in the mud and ruts.

Tried the difflock, and realised we had only rear drive.

We were in too deep to pull us our wirh just rear drive, so out came the front winch to pull us out whilst driving forwards.

This got us out pretty quickly, but it was obviously something was wrong.

Limped back to the unit in difflock high, and got her jet wash out.

Then we found something else, perhaps related, perhaps not!

One of the larger branches had become lodged in the suspension are at the bottom, and had clearly snapped off In situation!

So once it was a bit cleaner underneath, we got a better look at what was going on.

This is with the car in gear, but no difflock.

As you can see, front prop is spinning, meaning no drove to one of more of Rhe front wheels.

From the mechanical grinding noise, I’m thinking broken pin in the door perhaps?

I know it could be a half shaft, but I don’t think it would be making that noise?

Any ideas guys?

Yep we did wonder if it could be a CV joint, or even a half shaft, but the grinding noise sounds like a larger heavier mechanical item, the sound coming from the diff.

Will try jacking the front axle in a bit, to see what spins or what we can hear.

Hope you manage to fix it without too much hassle.

Look forward to find out what caused it, good luck 👍
