Fitting disco gears to Defender transfer box is brilliant, especially if you have a remap. I loved it in my previous Td5, and am now considering what to do with my new Td5, as it has a standard transfer box, and I won’t let ashcrofts touch anything of mine. So I either need to fit my own gearing, or find an alternative. I don’t ever recall it being too highly geared even towing a digger, but when doing manoeuvres I would use low ratio.

Ashcroft have recently started doing custom transfer box ratios

https://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/lt230-ratio-changes.html

I have slightly larger tyres (285 75 r16) and a v8 5th gear ratio on my TD5 and am seriously considering a 1.3 box to give it longer legs on the motorway without inhibiting towing capacity too much 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

So had a quick look underneath today and found that the transfer box fitted is a 1.667 ratio. Is that normal for a 2004 hardtop to have that from standard? I was under the impression that it should be a 1.4.

Mine is fitted with 235/85/16 guessing they are standard and it is a county pack.

many TD5 LT230's were 1.410 type 43D's but had the 1.667 sticker put on in error,

Yes, if it starts 43D (which is most likely) it’s a 1.410 Dave

Thanks for everyone’s help and options with Thais much appreciated. I really wanted to go down the line of a roamerdrive but I couldn’t justify the price and also found that the transfer box that was fitted was whining internally. I opted for a discovery 1.2 and I have to say alongside the Alive tuning remap I’m running works and runs perfectly, no troubles with hill starts or anything. Seems to help with fuel consumption also. Once i brim the tank I will give some feed back on mpg for anyone else looking to change.

Thanks again folks.

Jack
