will the rubber seals fit all models , I see some are foam and some are rubber ,is there a difference in the vents ?

Great question Tolley.
With out actually knowing, when you go to purchase some new rubbers, does it give you a choice to choose from? Could it be that they could be cut to size? some do say both will fit , but I think there is no difference in the vents ,maybe in the series 3 might but 90 are the same I think.

I read somewhere that early defenders have the seal attached to the vent which is secured with split pins in the hinge.
Later ones have the seal attached to the bulkhead with bolts in the hinge. Then again I could be talking rubbish ![]() |

Probably a stupid question given it's LR but why would there be 2 designs with 2 different materials?
I need to look at replacing my foam ones as they're old and brittle and I've started to get a whistling / howling noise coming when driving at 40mph+. Just wondering what the advantages and benefits are of one over the other? |

The earliest setup was rubber seals attached to the bulkhead, with vents mounted by split pin. Then late 80s sort of time the seals changed to the foam ones stuck to the vents. Vents still mounted by split pins. Latest setup was the foam seals still, but changed to long bolts to mount the vents - sometime during early Td5 era I believe. And of course deletion of the vents entirely when the Tdci dashboard got bodged in.
The earlier rubber seals are still available aftermarket, not sure about genuine. Later type still available both aftermarket and genuine - the latter being vastly superior in quality. |

The rubber seals arnt a great fit with the later TD5 bulkhead. The larger wiper spindles have a bulge in the bulkhead to fit them which protrudes into the channel around the vent. This means the rubber isnt a good fit around them and i found they wouldnt seal properly.

This made me wonder.... My car is a 94, 300tdi. I think it must be among the early 300 installs in the Defender. When I got it, it had bolts in the vents. But, whether split pins or vents, are the fittings on the vents and bulkhead the same? What I mean is, if you had a car with split pins, would the newer bolts just fit right in, or were other modifications made? As far as I know they’re the same from Series II/III right through to end of Td5.
The mechanism changed for the 2002 dash, but the vent itself might still be the same. |

just fitted the rubber one ,which I had kicking round so will let you know how good it is , seems to fit a lot tighter and seal better .

My dads has the rubber units with the bolts, mine has the pins with the foams. I have toyed with the idea of changing mine to rubber. If the foam ones are better than I will just replace them with the proper units. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Let us know how you get on with the rubber ones tolley.
I ordered some foam ones Procta given the positive reviews from members so will see what difference replacing the old brittle ones make. |

my parents had a right faff on getting the rubber ones to fit. So the less of a of faff on the better in my eyes. My foam is shot sadly too, keep me posted on how you get on
