After posting earlier I decided to give the woodwork a bit of TLC, forend got a clean & a once over with some fine wire wool before a couple of applications of boiled linseed/turpentine - boy was it thirsty! Anyway I got that to the point where it wasn't completely dried out after 30 mins, rubbed off the excess & will give it more each day until I am happy (I love oiled walnut on guns). Then turned my attention to the stock which had a few bruises on it & a couple of barbed wire scratches so needed a bit more attention so out with the iron & a wet cloth & most of them lifted out nicely. However, when I started to rub down with the wire wool I found some smaller dents I hadn't noticed so have ended up doing them & then decided to strip all the finish back. Have mislaid the alkanet oil so have had to order some more but once it arrives I will be carrying on the TLC. Have also ordered a vulcanite heel pad to give me the right length of pull so will fit that before I do the stock finish.

Huttopia - I always joked with my blonde bimbo whilst beating with her that it was good that we weren't doing it for the money as more seemed to be spent at the vets afterwards......she hunted well and no brambles would stop her ! Very Happy

There is truth in the Romadog. I honestly think that you never get to see a dog happier than when it is working. It would be good if they could take a bit more care though!

So this is 'work in progress' after cleaning & cutting back the original finish on the forend & yesterday's application of BLO/turpentine. Stock is a long way off yet...

Looking good!

Mine's 6 years old now and the wood hasn't been cleaned, oiled or otherwise looked after other than drying it off. I think it could do with a bit of TLC but i'm hankering after chopping it in for an Ultralight.

Ultralight 12g weighs about the same as a normal 20g, I've been using a 20g for about 5 years now, not only find it easier to carry but it's also a lot more 'pointable' than a 12g - used a 12g at a simulated driven day recently & it was hard work!!

I've always had it in my mind that as I am a relative novice, I should change as few things as possible, so a lighter version of the same gun seemed ideal.

The 20G obviously has some advantages in barrel weight (I guess) hence the "pointability". I believe the main weight saving on the Ultralight is around the breech construction, using titanium inserts Vs steel.

Thanks for the tips Thumbs Up

Had first visit to Hownhall Shooting Ground yesterday. Excellent set up with a good range of clays.
Well worth a visit if in the area.

Likewise, I had my first real shooting lesson at Mendip Shooting Ground last week. A great experience and so different to rifle shooting. Will definitely going back, but I think I have enough expensive hobbies already. But already tempted to apply for a firearms licence just incase I get the bug and want to buy my own shooter. 110 D250 SE HT

Tomorrow my son and I are going to a family and friends day shooting partridge. It is end of season for that shoot but there are plenty around. We will stand one and beat one, but I'll leave the gun at home so I can concentrate on my son (Oli, 11) and the dogs. Oli will be using a 20g side by side, non ejector (which drives him mad but slows him down) and 24g 7.5 cartridges.

Hoping for a safe, enjoyable day!

What a day! A couple of people didn’t turn up so the line was short and I ended up shooting on the peg along from my son. He was safe and seen to be safe, and managed to shoot a partridge. The old dog, with a fine sense of when I can / can’t concentrate decided to play up so was banished to the pick up for a while. The 18 month old was as good as gold and had a really smart retrieve on the last drive of the day.

It was amusing watching Oli out of the corner of my eye as he waited on the peg, he checked things once and then just stood quietly waiting, no fidgeting at all.
