I sold an 09, 2.0 SE Golf with a fvwsh for £3k a few months ago. It was super reliable, cost very little to service even at VW and did 55mpg at worst. They are around. You can pick up ex mod fiestas with low miles on for the same sort of money at auction.

Good luck!

Freelander td4 are absolute junk! Avoid the 2.0tdi VAG stuff terrible engines and gearboxes! The 2.0 tdci engines aren’t much good either.

how so? ive had 3 2.0tdi's, current one in a q3 quattro. gearboxes have always been silky smooth 100%silent! engines have never missed a beat, pull well, very quiet and 48mpg from the 4x4!
all of them have been 100% reliable!
what would be your engine of choice? My 109 thread

Our local Skoda dealer says that a Citigo is their go to car in the snow if all the 4x4s are taken.

Agree with Subaru suggestion though myself. Old Legacys and Foresters are cheap, reliable, respectable even when they are tatty, good in winter and good fun to drive. Not the cheapest insurance or tax though!

Skoda Fabia.

I'm of the generation that laughed at Skodas and it really was a struggle to put one on the drive, but 12 months later I'm well pleased with it. It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this.
SIII CSW Safari, limestone, (JAC 914N). Where is she now?

It's not a car, it's a way of life!

You probably aren’t keeping them long enough. We also
Had two A1’s and they had two timing chains each in under 4 years old, both Full main dealer service history from new and bought new, had two A6’s the old Tdi and bigger Tdi engines are better.

The sdis are even worse - plastic gears in egrs and IAC valves how stupid. Boost leaks and the bushes and arms on the front of them are just stupid. Everything is plastic and breaks if you look at it wrong- most people in the trade hate them.

I wouldn’t own another Audi- German junk and their customer service is terrible

Gone back to Fords.

But I’d agree scoobies are a great car. Bit like a Land Rover though keep them clean underneath. Rot in the shock towers at the rear kills them and head gaskets at higher mileages- not a bad job to do
Though.
