United Kingdom 2009 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Zermatt Silver
[Wanted] Reccommend cheap run around
Hi all.
I'm starting to commute from missus and it's a 38 mile trip one way cross country.
I've already got a defender and I don't want to put on miles because it's my toy.
Can anyone recommend a cheap 4 x 4 or a vehicle that is quite capable in bad weather and is relatively cheap to run and insure.
Plus if you have any vehicles for sale on here cheap I'd be interested I'm located near Lyme Regis.
Budget up to 3k.
Thanks HG

Ford Fiesta.
It's not 4x4 but will do the commute cheaper than anything that is. Probably cheaper to insure and tax too.
If the weather is so bad, then use the Defender when you have to.
I ran a Fiesta for a couple of years when doing 50 miles a day on the motorway.

Fiat Panda 4x4, amazing traction in bad conditions.
Cheap insurance, cheap tax and diesels are very economical. Thumbs Up 04' 90 Td5 CSW..

For pure reliability, I would honestly recommend a VAG 1.9TDi around 2004 model

We run 2 x 2004 VW Passat Estates through work to ferry work lads around the country, I paid £1000 for each one and they've both done in excess of 20,000 miles since January and they've been superb, 1 has needed a radiator in that time, one of them has just clicked 190k and pulls like a train still.

These can be bought cheaper, but I paid a little more for good condition, well maintained vehicles and its proven to be good for us.

I wouldn't go for the later 2.0tdi as the 1.9 is the better engine.

These are found in Audi, Skoda and VW.

Other car I'd recommend, is as mentioned the Fiesta 1.4 diesel and Mondeo Mk3 2.0tdci, I have experience of both and we still have our mondeo.

V8 Grand Cherokee

I ran one for years and had no issues. Think I spent less in fuel on that than I do in the defender and with the V8 and a k&n intake it made a really nice noise when you put your foot down 😁

Cheap run around = ford fiesta as others have posted above. You won;t get cheaper and easier to maintain...

If you want 4x4, I have a Volvo Xc70. An older XC70 (or "crosscountry") is great to drive, and you could get a good price on a late Gen2, or early Gen3. Mine's an early Gen3, and the D5 engine with "Geartronic" is awesome. Had mine almost 10 years and can't fault it. It's a 4x4, awesome in bad weather, but does not look like a 4x4.

Old Freelander another option? Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Td4 freelander. Had it for 5 years and did nothing to it other than routine servicing and replacing the usual consumables , pads tyres etc

Suzuki Jimny - cheap to buy, run, maintain and will go anywhere (similar to a Panda 4x4 in attributes but more of them about). 110 First Edition, NAS, 50th, SV, 90 CSW 300 Tdi

I would be looking at a really really common 2wd, probably a fiesta as suggested, and put some proper winter tyres on it. That will be as good as anything in winter driving and you know that maintenance and parts will be stress free. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Much as I'm a fan of the Freelander 2, this ^^^ is the best suggestion by far. Darren

I have been running my Honda Jazz for 12 years and have never had a fault or bill other than servicing and one change of tyres in 52,000 miles. Great little car.I would buy one again . They are not favoured by the tearaways, like Corsa's, and are therefore usually in good nick with reasonable mileage at reasonable prices.
