Play in gear lever?
The gear lever (on my 2005 TD5) has about two inches of side to side play when in fifth gear.
In the other gears there’s only a half inch of play.

Fifth gear does work fine, but is it normal to have this much play in the lever? It’s done 105,000 miles.

Usually, it is the bias springs that have weakened and need adjustment also it might be worth checking the NYLON CUP that the gear lever sits in for wear as well. To adjust try putting the gear lever first in third and then loosen the lock nuts and adjust one of the two bolts until all play has been removed. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Thanks for the information l adjusted the bias springs a while ago to stop the lever vibrating at certain RPM. That’s all fine now except for fifth gear.

Is the nylon cup easy enough to replace and could it wear in a way that only affects fifth gear?

To answer the question about the plastic bushing (cup) yes it could cause the play though, not likely as much as you describe. Its intent of that item is to diminish vibration and rattling. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

Maybe worth a disassembly and look for wear and tightness of all linkages, screws and pins etc. Especially the grub screw (item 16). The shift tower also wears out on high mileage vehicles and would require replacing.

Lovely and simple, pull the gaiter off, remove the gear stick, there's a fiddly smaller gaiter covering the bias springs which needs lifting then undo the 4 bolts holding the turret on and lift it off. There's a video on youtube about how to transfer the springs to a new turret but it's easy. Throw some grease in there whilst apart.

Well worth checking the grub screw #16 shown in the pic that 4RF RDS posted. I fitted a new turret to a recon gearbox almost 2 years ago then earlier this year i lost all gears apart from 3rd. Turned out there was no Loctite on the grub screw and it had worked loose. 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

check 16 is tight but its item 22 that governs how far the lever moves to the right to get 5th Dave

So that can be adjusted by the look of it.

I might try that, as it’s only fifth gear the rest are OK.
