Steering wheel puller
Really really simple question

Removing steering wheel so I can replace the horn stalk

Needless to say undoing the nut slightly and heaving on steering wheel ain't doing anything. The Haynes manual says build your own steering wheel puller utilising the 2 threaded holes steering wheel. Fair enough ... but it's useful if haynes actually tell you the size of the threaded holes!

The workshop manual doesn't tell you either!

Can anyone help ?

Before you buy or make a puller leave the centre nut on loosely then try rocking the wheel while pulling, a quick squirt of WD 40 on the threaded shaft may help as well. Just make sure you leave the nut on the last few threads because if it comes off suddenly you can get a right smack in the mouth. Eventually, with pulling and rocking the wheel from side to side it should come free of the splines unless of course, some daft Censored has used Loctite on the splines. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Presumably you're talking about the standard LR steering wheel with the big pad on.

I've just been and had a look at my spare one in the garage, there are two holes through the rubbery coating, one each side of the centre but below the centre line, I thought at first M8 and shoved a bolt down the hole, it was tight in the rubber but not catching to anything, I then tried an M10, even tighter but still not catching, they don't appear to be threaded.

To be honest, I've never needed a puller when removing one myself, just undo the nut a few turns as you say and pull, usually find a wiggle as you're pulling helps to loosen it.

As stated previously, all excellent advice. Further to these... with the nut loosened but not off, turn the wheel so a spoke is vertical. You now have enough room to hit it under the steering column. Then whack it with a dead blow hammer. Turn it so the other spoke is vertical and do it again. If you don’t have a dead blow use a mallet and strike it nearest the centre not at the rim. This should free it up.

Never needed a puller, loosen the nut then pull on the wheel with a rocking motion from one side then the other & don't be afraid to swing on it a bit :thumb-sup

On mine I undid the nut flush with the top of the thread. Then hit the nut with a mallet a few times whilst my mate was supporting the steering wheel and pulling it towards him. The shock frees off the wheel 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Many thanks for all the useful advice

A friend made up a puller from an old horseshoe he had lying around, I'll try a few of the suggestions before trying that ... and yes the screw holes are M6 ...
