Blown Damper
Noticed a screeching sound over the past couple of days. Looked under the chassis and found a hydraulic fluid explosion (ahem Whistle ) from the DS Rear Shock. As such the exhaust hanger has been scratching on the prop-shaft every time I went round a roundabout, (opposite to UK, so all pressure on the rear right corner), or up a twisty hill. Need to get the shock replaced asap. I assume general consensus would be, much like tyres, to change the rear as a pair if not all four? 65k vehicle.... Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I believe it is best to replace in axle sets like brake pads. So yes do both rears. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Does anyone have a list or know how many bushes I need to get for a complete suspension change? Is it two (upper and lower) per shock? As per OP, rear shock gone, going to take advantage and change all four corners. Following forum advice, going for OE bushes. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Each rear shock has three bushes, a single big one at the top, and two slimmer ones at the bottom.

If budget is good, I would even change the fronts too. With new bushes Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Yep change the lot at once.

I reckon bilsteins are pound for pound one of the best mods you can do to a Defender.

Just a warning make sure you have the right bushes and washers, some of the aftermarket are supplied with ones that don’t suit the later “Bush cup”. I think sometimes the pin ends aren’t quite right either. The 02 on lower shock bushes just don’t last. You can chop of the bush cup, but I’m not sure that helps either. Seen a lot of wallered out shock pin holes on Td5 axles.

Do you think they changed this bottom set-up because they wear out so bad? Seems to last longer with the 2 cup style bushes in the bottom.
