LDV Maxus
Off topic I know! And very boring but I’ve got this 08 LDV Maxus 2.5 VM Diesel in for Repair and pre MOT (yes I know Big Cry) so a call to all the experts and Def 2 CSI brigade lol.

Firstly it came to me as a Censored to start with a non existent starter and equivalent alternator, has been started in the past with easy start Shocked scrap I hear you say Question

Any how I’ve had to get it ready for MOT, I’ve replaced the starter motor and alternator and all was fine except cold starting which required the devil “sniff” to start, on a code scan suggests crank position sensor fault, replaced with a used sensor from a running van and no difference Big Cry

Now after a totally dead battery I charged it back up and same old reluctant to start without the spray, fired up then cut out after a minute and now dead. No starter turning now engine management lamp and scan tool now won’t communicate at all.

Initially I feared the ecu had been “spiked” so replaced the ecu and modules from a working van and exactly same symptoms.

I’m at the end of my tether on this now so any suggestions would be gratefully received. Formerly mao99999

Could the replacement crank sensor you fitted have worked loose or have bad contacts? Not sure if that would cause the ecu to lock out the starter, but I'm guessing the engine would stop if the crank sensor stopped working.
Probably not the issue, but might be worth checking as you had only just swapped it out to get it started.

I recon its the crank sensor failing, My dad had a VM powered Jeep and that did the same tricks. Cutting out when on the move. the only gripe is if you were to remove one off a donor jeep liberty, they are a Censored to get at! plus a small fortune to buy too. My dad ended up replacing both the cam and crank sensors. After that he decided to get shot as it was starting to be a Censored for support. Not sure if that's changed now. On the plus side at least you can read it! My dads Jeep hardly anyone could read the ECU! Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Thanks for reply’s keep them coming, don’t think it’s entirely the crank sensor as before even when disconnected the engine would crank over and throw an engine management lamp now it won’t even turn and no engine management lamp even on self check. I’ve tried “shorting” the starter and it turns fine but won’t start. Formerly mao99999

Would it have had a key with chip based immobiliser at that age? Just wondering if the immobiliser has kicked in and that's what's shutting everything down.
My mate's Honda Civic petrol used to do this occasionally. Engine warning light lit on the dash, starter wouldn't crank and electric fuel pump wouldn't run. Providing a direct feed to the fuel pump and shorting the starter made no difference as the ecu had also stopped sending a signal to the distributor.

No idea how you would check or reset this though on the VM , other than possibly a battery disconnect, and touching the live battery lead to earth. This trick seemed to work for the Civic.

Do you have another ignition key for it?

The older LDV Convoys had immobilising keys so based on age it could well do.

I seem to have sorted the no starter issues, a main feed wire to the starter had snapped inside the heat shrink protection near the battery terminals Embarassed

Still a PITA to start though always needs easy start, yet once fired sounds great and once warm will start all day Confused Rescan and always crank position sensor until start up then clear the code and nothing until another failed cold start Rolling Eyes

Traced the cps wires up to the ecu and exact same signal as the sensor itself, time to try the other ECU again and see if that makes a difference? Formerly mao99999

Are the glow plugs ok?

Also our Iveco daily was a pain to start. Turned out the starter was on its way out and drawing too much current causing all manner of starting problems. New starter motor sorted it Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
