Ive been using 2 stroke in my TD5 and have had the same kind of results. Was working about a hours drive away for a few weeks and every tank was getting me 32.5mpg apart from when i filled up with shell and then it dropped to 29 mpg on the same route with the same weather condition.

Pete.

Big Fog - i just gulped seeing the price per litre you are paying and how often you fill up........ouch.

i used to do very heavy miles years ago and filled up about every other day as well so that is serious miles you are doing.

now days a tank lasts me about a month Neutral BM52

seems the right time to chip in with my tuppenceworth on 2 stroke

My current motor, a Mitsubishi Outlander (ok boo hiss etc - new 110 to follow !) has the VW PDI engine - a tough little lump designed to be thrashed in Transporters and Caddys but hates short trips.

For the last 3 years I have had the same recurring problem. When the engine is running fine you can hear the turbo singing away and it pulls strongly from 50mph in 6th. During Winter and Spring its mostly short trips on the mummy circuit and this results in sluggish performance so around now it starts going into limp mode - the problem is always the MAP (boost) sensor getting oily and needing replacement which it was in 2008,09 and 10. Summer and Autumn are fine as we tug the caravan regularly so it gets a good caning.

Last November I started using 2 stroke -50m per 10l diesel and six months later its running as if I have just changed the MAP ie perfectly. The other thing I have noticed is that mpg on the short trips has improved from 27 to 32 and on the long trips we could never get beyond 37 - now easily 42 (haven't towed yet)

So I am a convert. To me thats real proof. By the way I used Millers ecomax for a year and it made no difference. I don't think it matters much whether its FC or FB because the arguements for both seem to be contradictory. FB is good as its mineral but bad as its higher in ash. FC is good as its lower in ash but semi synth (so doesn't fully burn they say) so its bad too. I'd use both and either Idea -what about mixing them !

Anyway when I get my hands on the Defender its going to be 2 stroke from day one. From my experience I'm looking forward to soot free EGR and turbo vanes smooth running and good MPG and at this stage nobody could convince me otherwise.

But if the engine blows up I'll be the first to admit my muppetry Embarassed
