Towing issue with a td5
Hi

When towing a standard Ifor Williams 505, 2 horse box unloaded there is a burning smell (clutch or brakes type smell) coming I believe from the defender. Any ideas what might cause this or the issue might be?

Can you check with another trailer of similar load to either confirm it's the Defender... or tow the horsebox with something else to eliminate that as the cause?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Feel all brakes on the vehicle (including handbrake drum) and check trailer brakes for excisive heat, in case you have a brake that's binding. Also, check for any oil leaks, it is surprising how a little bit of oil on a slightly hotter engine caused by towing can cause a smell similar to clutch and brakes. You could also try dipping the clutch and see when releasing the pedal where its bites, anything up to the halfway point is fine if it's only biting after the halfway point this could indicate a failing clutch. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..
