Because there's nothing to be enthusiastic about in a modern car

I just had a look at the Jeep UK website. The new Wrangler barely scrapes in under £40k so in that context, maybe that doesn’t make a £40k ish entry level Defender seem so outrageous. It’s way beyond my means, but relative to its competition maybe that’s about right. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

In UK terms maybe.

While the £ is still a bit above the dollar that is too much in world terms. In the US the Wrangler starts at $27,495

The other price context is the Toyota Land Cruiser, they're not cheap either.
Even the cheapest Prado (they do a commercial!) is mid thirties.

Some years ago I had a very good relationship with my local dealer. One of the managers was a personal friend. This was during the P38 era. They were not buying P38s from Land Rover, they were buying them from a dealer in the Netherlands, because it was cheaper to buy them that way than it was to buy them direct from the factory. So basically Land Rover will price the vehicle according to what they think the local market will pay

The new Defender will be made in Europe so prices may well be higher in the UK.

The 2019 Suzuki Jimny looks more Defender than that. More realistically priced as well.

So for a family 110 XS your looking at probably £50,000

The issue I have with all these new look a like models is they change them too quickly... so you have the old model almost once you have ordered it. My dad bought a new Full fat RR and less than 6 month later they revamp the inside to give it the velor informatics system and moved the controls around.

I'm sure I will go and look at them and make my mind up, the nicest (priced) LR that I like is the Discovery Sport out of the new range.

Looks its going to be expensive

They don't change them that quickly, the big full fat range came out in 2013 and they've updated it 2018.

The L322 rangie came out in 2002 had minor updates 2005 with the infotainment etc. Then a refresh, engine changes and facelift 2007/8 so roughly the same time scale. Then they updated it again further down the line.

I Just went on the Jeep website and chose a 4 door with every option (almost all std) and it was £42,800

If the New 110 has the same spec for the £ then that's not too bad.

Given I recently was looking at new cars for the wife and managed to get a mini convertible (and it wasn't a JCW) to £30K

Shocked

Because people don't look at the whole price, just the monthly finance or pcp. Very rare that people buy brand new cars from the showroom in one lump these days.

^ True its all on the never never or balloon payments...

I have a friend of a friend coming out of the company car scheme (which is £400 a month) and instead going to lease a Bmw M3 for £760 a month over 3 years ????

£760 for a little BM albeit a quick one for 3 years..... Over £27K and I'm guessing an upfront payment also? Cannot get my head round that..

I have a large spreadsheet that I use for big purchases, although it's impossible to factor in intangibles.

For commodity things (i.e. it doesn't matter if it's car x or car y, I just need to get to work) then renting often works out cheaper in the long run. For personal things (I own a modified Defender) then buying is really the only option. I'd love to buy a house but the spreadsheet tells me it's quite a bit better to rent.

I believe that picture is rubbish, but if it isn't, that will be a massive win for current Defender owners both in enjoyment & the vehicle's appreciation, as it will then be known that nothing like a real Defender will be built by JLR again.

Slightly OT but I was thinking just the same thing a couple of days ago about the new Discovery. I saw one parked alongside a Disco IV and I thought I cannot see the current Disco getting the same following as the outgoing model which I think most agree was an absolute corker. Ability, spec and that iconic look nailed. Therefore I thought that Disco IVs could become a future classic and retain strong resale values for those who must have a 7-seater and for those that don't, they'd buy the Disco Sport or the Velar. Same thinking with the Def. Monsieur Le Grenadier
