Battery Terminals
Hello folks,

Has anybody fitted better battery terminals? The existing ones on mine are impossible to tighten up properly. No matter how tight I do the nuts, it's still possible to move the terminals on their posts. Darren

I haven't on a Defender, but I have on other cars. The earth terminal is easily replaced, there are various crimp on, clamp on or even solder on terminals.

The Positive terminal is a little more difficult as it contains a massive fuse, so it becomes more complicated if you want to retain the fuse.

It helps if you loosen off the terminals, then tap the terminal down onto the post using a large socket and a small hammer, before tightening them back up. Putting water pump pliers or mole grips on the tail of the connector to stop it rotating as you tighten the nut also helps.
If your battery posts are a little out of spec (cheap batteries) of if they're worn from the terminals being moved about or not fitted correctly, you can cut out a piece of thin steel from a tin can and wrap around the post before putting the terminals back on.

Thanks. There's nothing wrong with the battery posts. It's the original LR battery and it's in good condition. I quite like the idea of wrapping some thin steel around the posts to pad them out but I would be interested to hear if anybody has replaced them with something more conventional. Darren

I had the same issue when replacing the battery recently! I found tapping the terminal bracket onto the lead terminal with a small hammer helped a lot, make sure you don’t clonk the terminal though as removing it might then be difficult......the terminal brackets did then tighten securely....... 2008 TDCi 2.4 XS CSW

That's why I suggested putting a socket over the terminal, get one just larger than the battery post and it drives the terminal not the post. Wink

I've fitted these to replace the pressed steel ones (which always distort) on other cars.

They're easy enough to solder on, then you can put some heat shrink over the cable join to make it neat. But I'm still not sure what you'd do with the positive terminal.

Solved the problem this morning. Made some shims, from copper rather than steel as it was easier to work with, and it's worked a treat. Thanks for the idea Thumbs Up

I replaced my negative clamp with the type with a 10mm stud that accepts a 10mm cable lug crimped onto the negative cable to makes wiring accessories easier, such as my negative winch cable. I didn’t actually have a problem with lack of tightness on the battery post on the Puma but used the copper shim solution on my Son’s 300tdi to good effect. 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black.

Actually I hadn't thought of cutting a bit off some copper pipe, better than steel.
