Alternative to LT95 box
The plan was to replace the 4 speed with an auto with the v8 but am having second thoughts and think I will stick with the manual box.
Which is the best replacement, the R380 or LT85?
Will they fit onto the mounting points of the old 4 speed LT95 or will I need to modify.
Any opinions / guidance would be appreciated.

I’ve gone off the LT85, mine (a recon box) is really notchy and no good at being rushed.

I still want to auto my station wagon this summer, if I do the LT85 will be available.

Have you sorted an engine for her yet?

The LT85 in mine is quite agricultural but after driving Series Land Rovers it’s not that bad at all IMO. Smile

I'd quite like to know the answers to your questions too Peterl. I'm looking to ditch the LT85 in mine for an R380, primarily for the quieter running and less agricultural feel. I assume the gearbox mounts are universally positioned, as I have not heard of anyone moving those mounts? 2005 Td5 90 XS

In terms of which is the better box, it's the R380. The LT85 was strong in its' day but the later 'L' suffix R380 is stronger and is also much nicer to use. Darren

I would agree with the above comment but I’ll keep my original LT85 as my 90 was built with it and it’s not an everyday vehicle.

Jeremy, have got a 4.6 going in, just sorting out a gearbox. I have a 4 speed auto which I could use but preferring the manual route. R380 is the option but I need a v8 belhousing and they are rare....
May do a deal for my auto , it’s full recon and done approx 100 miles.
Pm me if you are interested.

Pete

I replaced the LT 95 box in mine with the R380. You will also need the LT 230 transfer box and a different front prop shaft. Not to mention seat box, tunnel and floor plates.
It was 20 years ago when I did the switch but I have recollections of having to change the gearbox mounting brackets on the chassis as well, a simple check of the parts list will show if this is the case. They are not a big job to replace because they are bolted to the chassis

Looking to go back to manual, a four speed auto doesn't feel right, even if it does scare the sh** out of me when booted.
