2002 Defender 110 2.5 TD CSW Alpine White

Alpine Window fitting

New to the forum which I have been reading extensively over the last few weeks and picked up loads of Mod ideas - so thanks to all for some great tips and ideas. Had my TD5 110 for just over a year and am now just starting to make some improvements.

Seeing as it was a long weekend planned to tackle a few tasks:

Double washer mod (simple and managed to get passenger side on without removing vent)
Wire in RX8 seats (as been in since August last year!)

But the main one was changing alpine window seals as existing ones are solid / rotten. Have removed window easily enough, opening is clean. Fitted new rubber (checked correct size for 4mm glass) fitted rubber to opening and managed to get in one end of the glass and the top and the bottom edges to the start of the curved on the other end but there is no way the rubber can be pulled round the end curve as the glass is overlapping too much. I can see that the glass sits almost proud of the opening in the rubber but both ends are curving inside the opening and I can't slide it along any further.

Have used washing up liquid, and then one-cal frying spray then soaked the rubber in hot soapy water and still can't get it in! Can't believe there are no videos on you tube and many posts on various forums say the difficult bit is getting the filler strip in.

Need the truck for Tuesday so need to crack on (hopefully not literally!) so any suggestions / tips appreciated.

Thought I'd tackle a small window before attempting putting in the heated screen I bought recently!

They are really stubborn to fit. I've done a couple of sets now (one was with holes I'd cut myself so was unsure if they were the right size, the other was when I resprayed a roof, so took t he factory ones out and refitted)

Both were just as awkward as each other. I think I just used copious amounts of washing up liquid and brute force.

Fortunately the glass is quite tough so I didn't break any.

Have you tried the well tested method of using string around the seal? If you're unfamiliar with the method then type "Fitting a windscreen with string" into You Tube. Defender 90XS SW

Here’s a few pics of mine going in. The rubber was all perished on the old ones so I pulled them out cleaned it all up and fitted the new ones. It was a bit of a fight but the second side was easier! I used the orange twine you get on crabbing lines as it is thin, string and slippery to pull the rubber over the glass. I also remember the glass looked like it was sitting proud of the roof but with some brute force, I managed to push the glass back into the recess sufficiently. I would also highly recommend the special tool for fitting the infill rubbers and plenty of soapy water.

1998 Defender 90 300 Tdi SW Coniston Green

I replaced my Alpine seals last sunday.
It was a really really complicated job. If I had not disassembled by myself the windows few minutes before, I would have thought that the glasses are wrong with my car. Now reading this thread I discover that there are seals for 4 and 5 mm glasses.
May be my new seals were wrong... Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum
