Sounds like a great solution Dave.

If you need any testers, I'd happily fit one Whistle

Malta
Hi.

unearthing an old thread.

Since i am in malta (hot temps in 6 months a year) plus i will use the 110 for towing stuff. The 5th speed is also generating a whine. I don't think i will be able to strip it any time soon so i have been reading about oil coolers.

For the rest of the world market the defenders had a steel pipe that reached the engine bay on the left without a proper cooler.

Due to the presence of the full width allisport intercooler there is not much space left to fit an aftermarket 13 row cooler (which is advertised by Ashcroft transmissions) on the front.

my plan is to mount a 10 row or even 7 row aluminium oil cooler on the cross member between the front drive shaft and exhaust pipe (since it is flat and looks like it is open to a good amount of air flow). I was planning to use steel pipe (the one used by hydraulic shops) to run a loop before it gets to the cooler. Starts off the gearbox going along the chassis rail up to the front crossmember and back along the other rail of the chassis. It will go into the cooler and once out of the cooler it will go into the gearbox. As a safety measure i was interested in perhaps installing an oil pressure switch linked to a warning light just in case the circuit gets damaged and leaks. Installing a thermostat housing would add up complications.

I am not concerned with cold mornings but i don't like rushing up changes. The only problem is the short daily trips. i m interested in possible over land trips so it would be good since the TC is the low ratio type as used on 110 defenders

What are your opinions.

Thanks

Thing s you should consider as:

1. When you change the oil can you drain all the old oil from the cooler and pipework?
2. What’s the new oil volume so you don’t over or under fill the gearbox?
3. Can you install an valve or bypass so you only run through the cooler on longer runs, or in the summer?

You could get very technical and have a temurature controller valve that only opens up to the cooler when required. But that adds complexity and weak points when overlanding. Russell

hi

volume/amount of oil = i was hoping to keep the pipework below the filler plug. so oil stays in the system and gearbox at all time?

Draining the cooler lines would be tricky but perhaps fitting the cooler upside down and just unclipping one port??

as for block to divert oil in and out .. hm did not think of installing one but a good point.. problem is are these hard to get?

thanks
joe

Manual ball valves are easy to get hold of, you can have the the same size and thread as the connections on the cooler. Russell

hi yes i was thinking about it. wondering if it is possible to find something thermostatically operated like the 200tdi filter housing as fitted in my 2.25 diesel. but i guess a manual valve inside the cab would still be ok. or at least on the inside of chassis since i am not into the idea of butchering panels.

thanks for the insight indeed. i might do away with the steel pipe to the front and just fit the 10 row cooler under the box on the cross member. at best i can fit a small fan to it

Regards
joe

If i install a thermostat housing for the R380 the pressure to the oil cooler will not be constant so fitting an oil pressure sensor will only work when the stat is open and oils flowing.

still some more thinkering before i start sourcing bits. Sad

Im just looking at Oil Coolers and slick shift for my TD5 R380.

Has anyone fit these upgrades and if so, would you recommend. The items Im looking at are for sale by Syncro Gearboxes. Thanks

The bigger sump won’t fit Td5 it fouls on exhaust unless you fit upside down Whistle
