Oil Cooler & slickshift for R380
I’m just looking at Oil Coolers and slick shift for my TD5 R380.

Has anyone fit these ‘upgrades’ and if so, would you recommend. The items I’m looking at are for sale by Syncro Gearboxes. Thanks

I have a slickshift and would recommend it as it makes the gear change more pleasant. I have seen the cooler and it looks like a good bit of kit, will be fitting one to mine in due course Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Think I’ll try a slick shift then.

Reason I ask about Cooler, is my td5 isbtuned and it does some towing, getting off motorway tonight after 50 miles it was bit stiff to get out of 5th. Few minutes in the A roads and it was fine. I changed oil about 2k ago too so oil is fresh

I don't tend to suffer with that, mine is also heavily tuned and the gearbox does get warm after a few hours at 80mph. The cooler if nothing else will prolong gearbox and oil life. It would be interesting to see how much difference in oil temperature it makes at a steady load.

I know it uses the existing oil pump on the 'box but there is no thermostat. Apparently you can't over cool a gearbox..... 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Do you run ATF of MTF94 gearbox oil?

I have a Slickshift on my TD5 also, it definitely improves the change, and I'd buy another.

Its fitted it to a recent Ashcroft uprated R380 with a new selector turret also. The only negative is that finding 2nd / 3rd when driving before the box has warmed up is a little harder compared to the new box without the Slickshift. I presume that is down to the reduced throw of the stick and subsequent reduced tolerance for the gears to align. 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

+1 on slick shift. Bought mine from Paddocks I think and they have good how to video. they recommend putting the car into 2nd or 3rd gear when rebuilding and adjusting springs at that stage if i remember correctly. No problems with any gear selection. Jeff

I'd be more inclined to fit a transfer box cooler, they seem to get hotter and be worried about more.

I know my r380 is stiff when it's a bit chilly of a morning!

Thanks for the replies, I will speak to Syncro at Stoneleigh on Sunday as I find myself using it more and more now so think a cooler on both transfer and box would advantageous

Fitting a transfer box cooler would require an external oil pump as there isn't one built in the box with outlets etc like on an R380. Easiest way to cool the LT230 is fit a larger sump. The additional oil volume helps to cool dramatically.

we have designed and made a prototype oil pump to cool either MT82 oil or LT230 oil, its a R380 oil pump in a small ali housing which bolts to the back of the LT230 and is driven by the PTO drive teeth, with an inlet and outlet port on the side of the housing.

it has a very small one way clutch so it slips when in reverse, the only small issue we have had is the first initial prime, the R380 pump is usually submerged in oil but on the back of the 230 its above the oil level and struggles to prime itself, once manually primed its OK as we have a one way check ball valve to stop it draining back,

there is an oil seal between the pump and the pto drive collar so the LT230 oil it not mixed with the oil you are pumping / cooling,

guess I need to make a few and hand them out to some guinea pigs !

My dads got a cooler on his transfer box, I showed him a video of someone going on tour for a year and the lad was going off road too.
With my dad towing his caravan, the box would get quite warm, so he jumped at the chance to fit one, it did the job no bother at all and is worth the upgrade. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

MTF94 in the best quality available from my local motorfactors Thumbs Up

As the transfer box has no pump it's a bit of work to get any additional cooling other than an extended sump as Dave had explained Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Thanks all, I recently changed all fluids and refilled with MTF94, can't recall what brand though.

Think i'll go for an Ashcroft bigger sump for it though as they're not big money.
