Rusty bolts
Whilst giving the 110 it's annual wash at the weekend the wife noticed an odd thing. No, not me. She noticed that on the door hinges, one in every group of four has gone rusty, also on the front, one of the four bumper bolts has gone rusty as well, question is what do I do?
Do I get a stainless steel bolt kit and change them all or as its still under warranty get LR to change the rusty ones? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

Not unusual, some of mine went rusty. Also quite random.
Depends on wether you want to argue with the dealer as to warranty covering rusty bolts.
I just bought original replacement bolts and did it myself. Not a big job. Now liberally coated with ACF50 on a regular basis.

Hello

Changed most of mines the other day Smile

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54898.html

Used copper grease to re tighten, just need to take the rear trim off to do 2 more and they are all done Smile

The dealer will just replace with the same bolts which will do it again I guess?

Easy and cheap 'mod'

I once queried why a brand new Defender had red rusty grille screws and i was told farmers didn't want to pay for protected items.

I replaced the front bumper bolts with stainless steel bolts, but for all it would cost I think these should have been fitted at the factory. My door hinge bolts have a few rusty bolts. These have not been replaced but again should have been stainless steel.
Sorry just a whinge.

This thread may be worth a read.

And then make up your own mind what is best.
I would buy a pot of Weicon, buy replacements for the rusty bolts, dip the new and screw in. Then one by one take all others out too, dip in Weicon, put back in. Basic preventive maintenance you know.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Had the same problem with 6 hinge bolts rusting, took for it's 2 yr service last Wed and only mentioned it to the service lads at Conwy Land Rover and when I picked it up they had replaced all 16 bolts on the side doors, So my advice would be to mention it to your dealer and get them done under warranty.

Get them done under warranty, then replace the door ones with stainless next time around.

If you've ever any intention of fitting a winch, HD bumper or a towball on the front bumper don't bother with stainless bumper bolts as they're not as strong. If you buy the britpart bumper fitting kit it comes with slightly longer high tensile bolts with plastic caps to cover the heads. Wink
