Exactly what blackwolf said above.
If you are after just purely a recover point then a Jaw using a pin will be in my opinion be a safer and stronger. IMHO the NATO will do as a recovery device but it is still primary a towing device and i'm not a fan of exerting that type of force through it. Something like this >> http://dixon-bate.co.uk/products/gb/univer...coup-.html Means a captive rope holder and the force of the recovery is being exerted in the same direction as it has been designed to work with. If we use a historical view the 3.5ton Dixon bate jaw http://dixon-bate.co.uk/products/gb/jaws/1...coup-.html is what was used for the camel trophy as a recovery point. |

You mentione light off-roading. But off-roading light doesn't mean your recovery will be light.
Ok I am normally not somebody who goes for light off-roading but still I happen to get suddenly unexpected very stuck. Like here, this looked like a short easy climb. (I am on 35" Simexes) I just suddely sunk in. I'm being slightly disingenuous - I'm not driving back there from the UK - I live in Veneto until the autumn so it's only 2 hours away. Unfortunately arriving at 3 won't work as we're intending to walk the 10km route around the Peaks so we'll need to start early, particularly bearing in mind my level of fitness hopefully we'll stay long enough for the sunset anyway but we'll be carrying 2 x 9 month old girls with us so it will be up to them mostly. It'll still be wonderful whatever happens! |

Thank you all. So I'll be going for a jaw. Does anybody have the part number for the reinforcing plate? (if there is any - is KNK100090K still available from Land Rover?)
@roel: That's exactly how stuck I wish I'll never get. Holy crap. But I guess one has to be prepared for anything, right? @Thon: Haha, that makes sense. I'm glad to hear that as I would have been really devastated to hear that some people are driving twice from the UK to the Alps and back in three months (with two 9 month old girls) and I am afraid of a 1.600km drive to Denmark for months before even starting. Nevertheless have a great time. I'm sure it will be wonderful. All the best to you, your wife and the girls. . _____ .|_____\___ [|_/-\__/-\_|} ...(O)....(O)........ MY14 2.2 Defender 90 SW |

Latest plate is KNK500030 and if you type "Defender NATO plate" or that part number into eBay you'll find many at prices from £5.69 inc p&p upwards, all NOS.

Yes, it's a nice surprise (and all too rare) that a Genuine Part is far cheaper than you expect!
Almost makes you want to buy several of them 'just in case'! |

Update: Instead of buying something to bolt on to the rear crossmember I decided to design something myself and a friend of mine welded it together:
Click image to enlarge I decided to use as many bolts as possible and included the L-profile of the previous tow hitch as well. I hope this plate is up to all recoveries I'll have to do and spreads the forces sufficiently. For the front I ordered some JATE rings from paddocks and obviously they don't fit as I have mounted the original tubular steering guard. Can I remove 2mm on the inside of each side of the JATE ring without weakening the rings too much? The wider JATE rings of most shops seem to have been filed down anyways... You can get them to fit the rear of a late 90 but it's a little tight between the fuel tank and the outer edge of the JAT ring, you can't see from the photos but I only have 2-3mm clearance.

Hi Def90, thanks for the photos!
Did you have to drop the tank or anything like that to install them? I presume yours had the shipping/towing eyes as well. Did you have to grind those off to remove them? . _____ .|_____\___ [|_/-\__/-\_|} ...(O)....(O)........ MY14 2.2 Defender 90 SW |

Hi Thor44
The factory shipping/towing eyes just unbolt but you will need to drop the fuel tank to remove the original bolts that retain them, my tank had to come out to fix the tank breather pipe! When I re installed the fuel tank I also fitted solid rubber pads either side of the fuel tank between the tank and the chassis rails as a precaution to stop the tank from moving from side to side and hitting the JAT ring as they are very close. Click image to enlarge On the pictures of the military defenders fitted with rear JAT rings that I have seen,it appears they re use the original factory shipping/towing eyes but swing them around and use them as a spacer for the JAT ring. I decided to make up some spacers as these shipping/towing eyes are 1.5mm too thin and you will crush the JAT ring when you tighten them up. These are not fitted as recovery points but are just for lashing down as per the original factory shipping/towing eyes. |

Thanks a lot for the update. If I get around to drop the tank sometime in the future, that'll be the thing to do. . _____
