It sounds like you have done the right thing already - pull over and call for help.
Oil in the exhaust could be a failed turbo. An option is to get to a Land Rover dealer in France, see what they can do. I had to do this near Limoges and they were fabulous, five guys instantly jumped on the vehicle including the boss and worked on it for two and a half hours after hours... ![]() Good luck. |

Hope you get this sorted stricko
My advice, as you have noticed the Oil...is get your vehicle plugged in to reveal any logged Fault Codes ![]() Good Luck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

It's now in a garage being checked. He reckoned it could be the turbo.
I have an after market warranty which may cover it hopefully --------------------------------------------------------------- |

Well good news I think.
The garage reckon the diagnostics say it was something to do with anti pollution?? (Could be translation issues here) He reckons it was because I do lots of small journeys it was just clearing itself out. ? And we are good to go Does this make sense? --------------------------------------------------------------- |

'anti pollution'...
![]() Well maybe, but I would have thought that your Defender would have cleared itself out reasonably soon after setting off / warming up...it is true that even when 'pottering' around reasonably slowly for some time and then 'pushed' it can 'clear it's throat', but would this be enough to display the MIL (Engine Light)... ![]() Hope that you don't see it again...Good Luck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

When the EGR is clogged up, the orange MIL will show up on dash but no other symptom will be seen (i.e the engine won't go in failsafe mode).
So, most likely the EGR IMHO. βA Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, [β¦] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!β - Land Rover Driving Technique. -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" |

Hold on and by all means put me straight, but why would the EGR system (which circulates a % of the exhaust gasses from the exhaust manifold back in to the engine intake system post intercooler) cause oil to appear in the exhaust system? And surely if oil was getting in to the egr system then it'd be burnt off in the combustion process, unless of course there was a lot of oil that is...

update:
Thanks for all the input. We have now got to our destination. The oil was a bit of a red herring. It was actually carbon type deposit inside the exhaust mixed with some condensation from the cold early morning and it created a thick oil like substance. I am guessing the anti-pollution comment from the garage was referring to the DPF. Anyway we here now and all the recovery and garage time etc was paid for by the insurance. I will check out the EGR valves (is it something that can be checked)? A side note. The garage had 4 army defenders in when we arrived and when I asked about them, he then showed me round the back where they had a few Series models which they were restoring along with a triumph spitfire and an old mni cooper. He also had what looked like a complete defender rebuild going on. --------------------------------------------------------------- |

There is no DPF on a MY2010 Defender (from your signature) and the EGR is an "anti-pollution" device ![]() -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" |

does it do the 'chuga chuga chuga' noise when switching off? If not it could be the egr stuck which may also give black smoke, rough running and all other sorts of issues.

If you're getting the chugga noise on switch off, egr is going through its self cleaning cycle and should be working ok.
MIL can illuminate for all sorts of daft reasons, some sensor operating higher than expected but within normal range etc. I run with a fault code reader scangauge 11 installed and a list of the codes so I can easily check and clear the light as required. |
