Knackered brakes
Had my 55 reg 110 in for service and general check up this week

Garage tell me the brakes need replacing, not just discs and pads but that the calliper are shot

I did notice it pulled to the left a bit on high speed braking

47k miles / 10 years old so seems plausible just a larger bill than I hoped

Likely to need doing or them pulling a fast one?? Cheers

If the pistons on the callipers are heavily pitted then most garages will rather replace the unit than split a calliper to replace the pistons. I would ask what is wrong with the callipers and why they recommend replacement. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

It is highly plausible that a 10-year-old vehicle has sticking pistons in the calipers, and the garage solution to this is to replace the calipers (it is cheaper in parts and labour usually to do this, and there is a more predictable outcome, than to overhaul the old calipers with new pistons. The latter is more labour-intensive though possibly cheaper on parts, and makes some sense cfor DIY).

I've replaced quite a few on Defenders, certainly more than vans and cars!
2 fronts replaced on a 2011 were the most recent.

Replacing the seals and pistons are hardly worth the bother now,
You can get refurb Pagid calipers for £70 a side.

My 2008 could do with a pair upfront soon.... Rolling Eyes 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

I Had one around 6 months ago as it was pulling to the left I think the part was around £60 plus fitting.

Is there anything better to fit without going down the silly expense route?

Larger discs . better pads?

Would they fit / be any better

Just asking as if I do the Remap and extra bits the brake do feel a bit lame compared to other cars I have had...

thanks for replies

thats exactly it - corrosion and sticking pistons

I have looked into upgrades but v little thats sensible for less than £3k AP or Alcon stuff and most of the upgrades require bigger wheels than my std 16 inch boosts

have given the go ahead for AP / Lockheed branded calipers, c. £100 each, exact same as LR OEM just not in a LR box..

orig quote from garage was part no. SEB500460 at £466 + vat each Shocked Shocked

Sticking pitted Pistons... The plague of defender brakes...

Best replace with recon'd standard items and if you do want a small upgrade then drilled and grooved discs and EBC green stuff pads are a great option.

Brakes on my 110 are superb with this setup. Just remember to bed it all in properly once fitted.

unfortunate thing with defender calipers is the 70s design that does not protect the pistons from the elements like later designs tend to, this along with chromed steel pistons will unfortunately result in a more frequent replacement requirement than more modern designs. Having said that they are comparatively reasonably priced, and if you are so inclined you can fit stainless pistons DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy
