If its as bad as mine, time to clean down the back of the engine and watch with interest!
Is its leaking down the side the g/box ? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Also, is the plug between the two red arrows in second picture my wading plug? I've only ever seen them with a bolt head, not recess. If it is, i'll go whip that off and see if anything drains out.
It's a TD5, should I put it back in or leave out? I've read both. Ta TD5 Defender 90 Discovery 3 HSE |

Assume it is a td5?
First is no doubt the transfer box crosspin/idler shaft o-seals. Cheap to replace but sadly transfer box has to come out to do them. Eventually the casing bores oval so even new o-rings wont solve it. Second it oil leaking down from the rear of the engine block. It could be the rear crank mainseal but more likely the back of the sump gasket leaking. If it is the sump gasket then there isna metal plate which stops the oil contaminating the clutch. Interesting idea on the sump gasket, mine is leaking as well but I assumed mine was the half moon seal on the rocker gasket. I will check mine as well.
Sorry to hijack - but can you do the sump gasket without having to remove the g/box? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Hi, they look like typical Td5 leaks as mine has had both! As already said the transfer box is usually the intermediate shaft o-rings. If you look up the front face of the box you will see end of the shaft and if the oil starts from there it will be the problem. You can see the end of the shaft in this photo, it's the small black circle in the centre of the box.
![]() Click image to enlarge They can be done in situ by changing the bolts for threaded bar and sliding the transfer box back about 6 inches but it is far easier with the box out on the bench. Luckily you can change the seals by tapping the shaft back and forward and you don't have to open the box. There is also a rear seal in the casing which I replaced at the same time. You can see the nut on the rear end of the shaft in this photo. ![]() Click image to enlarge The seals I took out were very flat and heavily worn. ![]() Click image to enlarge The leak between the engine and box I think is the rear main seal on mine. I've decided to leave this for now until it needs a clutch as its not dripping too much. Hope this helps. Last edited by Baz8046 on 13th Jul 2016 11:44am. Edited 1 time in total |

I've ordered a LT230 seal kit from Shabs at syncrogearboxes (nice chap). http://www.onlinegearboxparts.com/product/lt230-gasket-kit/
Not idea if I am capable of dropping the box out myself...but willing to give it a go (maybe). TD5 Defender 90 Discovery 3 HSE |

It's quite easy to take out if you take your time and check everything is disconnected first. The hardest bit it holding the box on a trolley jack because of the shape of the box and the angle it sits in the car. I made a cradle from some wood off cuts to stop the box slipping. I'll take a photo tomorrow.

Here is the cradle I made up which makes the job of dropping the transfer box easier. Having looked at the leak between the engine and box again on mine it is wet down the side of the gearbox. More investigation required this weekend I think.

Thanks Baz, only just seen your reply
![]() I bought this seal kit for the LT230 transfer box; http://www.onlinegearboxparts.com/product/lt230-gasket-kit and i'm hoping to get this done in next couple of weeks. Whilst i'm dropping the transfer box, is there anything else I can/should do whilst i'm there? Cheers TD5 Defender 90 Discovery 3 HSE |
