Trailer rebuild
In the interest of frugality I am considering rebuilding and making a couple of modifications to an older factory built trailer. In the same way as with vehicles is there a point where rebuild becomes new build and therefore subject to iva sva type inspection? Eg with a car so long as you leave the chassis alone you aren't obliged to be inspected though you may voluntarily have one and things like axles and engines have points that accumulate to determine the originality of the vehicle? All I would be altering would be the type of hitch but not the basic mode of its operation and also the wheel and tyre size any other work would be replacing like for like? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

I am not aware of any regulations specifically applicable in this scenario (yet) so I don't think you'll have any problems. I suppose the simple answer is don't tell anyone.

I have an ex-GPO/BT small plant trailer that I intend one day to spruce up, and was thinking of upgrading it to autoreverse brakes at the same time. That would mean a new coupling, new axle (including suspension), new brakes, new hubs, new brake rigging, possibly new gross weight. Is it the original trailer? I reckon so, other may not agree. Without the original design data (and I don't even know who built it) it would be hard to prove!

It does but it is also slightly out of date as it suggests that the plated weight is what matters which was true until a couple of years ago I believe when it reverted back to actual weight of the trailer for trailers under 3500kg, ie previously I would not have been able to tow my 3500kg plated trailer behind my cherokee with its 2688kg tow limit. Now however I can tow the same trailer with my Jimny so long as I have no more than 200 kg of load in the trailer therefore keeping below the 1300kg tow limit for the car. I wouldn't want to do it though as the rig would look wrong no matter how legal it was and would be asking for a tug off plod.

Also their article makes no reference to rebuilt trailers.

Being a vital part of my business I have taken it upon myself to be as legal as I can and wherever possible to know the details and consequences of towing but by god they don't make it easy, far too many gray areas. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
