Hi all, I'm in the process of getting a new to me Dell optiplex 760 which is as I understand equipped with a displayport, I am wanting to use my tv as the monitor so need a dp to hdmi which are readily available however I only have 2 hdmi ports on the TV one is virgin one is blue ray so I would need a splitter which are also available. Question is can i get one cable that is both ie hdmi male and dp + hdmi female, so I have less joints and better signal? Budget and schedule are both tight as I would like to be up and running by Monday so a high street supplier I can visit would be great. All help appreciated. Or maybe another way of using the other ports on the TV?
I recently bought a DAC so I could use the optical out connector to wire to my sound system...works a treat. USB connections for hard drive, HDMI for DVD, Optical for Sound etc. Just wondering if you could re-use one of your existing devices (Blue Ray) and connect it in a different way (optical, USB?) to free-up the hdmi, so you can use that for your Dell PC. BTW after a lot of research, I bought a British DAC... a "Beresford"... http://www.homehifi.co.uk/S/home.htm Fibre optic cables are cheap as chips Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Yeah I have been trawling their pages and whilst I have found various options I don't see what I ideally want but that is probably because I don't know if it has a special name. You will probably be able to download the technical manual for your TV off t'internet...
Then check if there's another combo of options to connect your Blue Ray... freeing the HDMI for your PC... You can often get small converters (from Maplins or online maybe like Amazon) Just a thought/example... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Optical-Toslink-C...B00SIZEPOQ Dependant if you have a smart tv you may also be able to connect your PC via blue tooth or wireless network? (I think I can with my Panasonic...but never tried it). Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

The only unused ports on the TV are 1 usb2, yprpb and a network cable and unfortunately I went for 3d not smart so no wireless connectivity or bluetooth. I will fish out the manual and see if I am missing something obvious, I suspect that I am. Cheers. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

I think you'll struggle to find a solution that doesn't require an extenral HDMI switcher (or a new TV
![]() The yprpb connection is 'Component' which is an HD capable connection. If your BluRay player has component output (most don't!), then you could use this to connect and free up an HDMI port for the PC. However, in general component connections don't support HDCP (HD Copy Protection) which is present on pretty much every Bluray disc. The optical connector mentioned earlier in the thread is for audio only so no use for video. 2020 110 D200 Base - Pangea with satin paint protection 2015 90 XS Station Wagon (sold) 2010 110 XS Station Wagon (stolen) Last edited by 7heaven on 14th May 2016 11:19am. Ok so the new to me machine has arrived and it's not a 760 but a 745 which seems to mean just a vga output so after a session down at maplins I now have a usb to hdmi box which was set up in store, only when I get it home my Samsung tv doesn't see a signal? The machine is definitely working on my old vga monitor and the feed is set to mirror through both the vga and usb/hdmi? The only other thing is evidently the internal coin battery is on its way out so booting up needs a f1 key press which needs in turn a wired keyboard because it seems not to recognise the wireless one as it calls itself something other than a keyboard, but only in the boot sequence. is all this related and could a new battery obviate the issue of it not feeding the usb/hdmi? Can you tell I'm at the limit of my understanding of computers? Any help would be appreciated. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Some of the older TV's don't support full HD although they have HDMI ports,so the resolution that your new PC is trying to use the TV can't display.
If you use the old VGA screen try and set the resolution to a fixed size and then swapbto the TV and see what gets displayed. |

cheers for all the input guys. it seems that the main issue stems from the bios now looking for a non existent drive and needing the f1 key pressing to bypass which until it is pressed the machine doesn't accept the usb/hdmi as a device. once up and running all is fine. pita.
