Roll cage - Rear suspension - Defender 110
Good evening all. I am in need of a little advice from the collective.

I have a 2002 110 with rkb101111's on the rear and standard HD springs on the front. The vehicle has a full safety devices roll cage and 90 rack situated over the rear of the vehicle.

The problem is that the rear end is lower than the front and suspect the rkb101111s are the wrong springs to have with roll cage. To the best of my knowledge the rkb101111 are dual rated, something like 270/450 lbs so think the lesser rated portion of the springs have been compressed and we are now sitting on the higher rated portion.

So the question is what to replace these dual rated springs with? What do you have fitted?

Id give gwyn lewis a ring and spec some OME springs of a higher poundage. you could also spec some springs which are perhaps 2" taller in combination with higher poundage.

Other idea... jack the rear of the vehicle up so the spring is not seated at the top (i.e. its not at all compressed) then measure the spring length. Compare this with a new RKB101111 to see if your springs are just plain old, or whether you need higher poundage / longer springs. If the current spring is 270lb/in at first then you can easily calculate if you changed to 300lb/in springs what your new ride height would be.

Hi mike. Both excellent ideas. I thoroughly respect Gwyns knowledge on anything suspension, used to have his challenge kit on this and a previous defender. Absolutely loved the added capability it gave the vehicles.

Anyone else with a roll cage care to share their suspension setup?

I had a similar issue with my 110, the back appeared to be lower than normal due mainly to the amount of junk I carry in the back. I tried a different approach by adding the inner helper springs as found on 130's
I have found this to be more than satisfactory on mine as they act like progressive springs, it takes a hell of a lot to "sink" the rear no matter how much weight is used and I still retain that less harsh ride on tough terrain.

Interesting. I had completely forgotten about 130 helper springs. I suppose you have those I side a standard rear spring 300ish llbs...?!?! Is that right?

After looking at HD springs, consider fitting an air bag each side:-

I've got these fitted on my 110, great anti roll characteristics and they can be adjusted to suit the load carried.
