Hello, all. For those of you who might be perusing the site whilst staying up to wTch the Aussie GP, more clutch questions please. Following on from previous threads, the clutch has been fitted, master cylinder replaced, system bled and finally managed to get the beast started. However, for love nor money, we cannot get clutch to engage properly. Reverse and First impossible, the remainder difficult and gratey. If that's a word. Any thoughts, before we delve back in? And assuming we have to delve back in, we're thinking Slave Cylnder (also new), but could it be anything else?
As a reminder it's a Puma 2.2 with standard 6-speed gear box. The clutch and slave were AP supplied by Ashcroft Transmissions. Nothing new, alternative, hand built or heavy duty. Like for like. Approx 70km on the clock. Tips as always welcomed, I'm off to watch the England GS match now.... ![]() I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Try adjusting the clutch pedal travel, exactly the same procedure on a TD5 and Puma.
Do an internet search on TD5 clutch pedal adjustment and all will be revealed ![]() My thread from six years ago about a similar problem http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic3604.html?highlight=clutch Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

Thanks for the answers. I should have said that the MC was replaced only after we first tried the new clutch and we suffered from the impossible R/1st and difficult 2/3/4/5/6. Should we still look at the travel or will that not make sense if the problem occurred both before and after the MC was replaced?

Yes !
You are going down the exact same route my dealer did, replace everything and in the end it was the adjustment that caused the problem. It is not a long job. Thanks Bob. PS, Miker, is putting in the clutch plate backwards even possible? My mech has 20 years experience, albeit this is his first Def. But I hope he'd spot a back to front clutch... ![]() I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Yes it is possible to get the friction plate the wrong way round, and I can see how it could be very easily done given the way a new clutch kit comes packaged...

I agree with all the comments about putting the friction plate in the wrong way round, my local Indie has had the same issue with Ford engined Defenders.

Admittedly mine is a TD5, but yes it's possible, and yes it all goes back together!
I've been fiddling with cars since I was in nappies, and my dad has been a mechanic for longer than I've been alive! We both looked at it, both vowed to look it up, both forgot! It had no markings on it either... |
