You can fit them on but they will rub on the arches as soon as you turn a corner. Best with a lift and trimmed or bigger arches

I'll try and dig out a picture of my old 110 with 35s before it was lifted. This is my 90 with 35's on and big arches. I pulled a standard rear arch off ( had been trimmed as well) so went for the big ones as high as I could mount them. I was mainly governed by how far the snow down came down the wing on the passenger side

Thanks for the image. Makes more sense to me. The guys looking for €750 for them on Modulars. Not a bad price but they're about 6 years old. Not a lot of wear but not fresh!

OK here's a couple of different tyre/wheel/spacer/arch/defender combos I've had over the years -

285/75/16 BFG Muds fitted to factory boosts - No suspension mods, no spacers. It drove just fine. Slight rub on the chassis on full lock but this could have been easily solved with a bump stop adjustment.

305/70/16 Mickey Thompson muds on 16x10 et-35 offset modular. 1" rear lift on HD suspension all around.

It now also has a 2" front suspension lift and 3" rear suspension lift on medium duty springs. I don't have a photo of that though.

How would you compare them?


With só many 285/75r16 on 7j rims around, I wonder if mounting them on Wolf 6.5j rims would be such a drama

Honestly there's not a huge difference in the road driving on modern muds. The biggest difference is fuel consumption. My MoD 200tdi was doing around 31mpg with 265s. Thats dropped to 29mpg with the 305s. Personally I think 285 is the perfect size.

I've not done any serious off road with the 305's or the new 285 AT's. The new BFG AT is a pretty chunky beast though. I imagine it would perform ok.

Someone commented earlier on this thread about wide tyres aquaplaning. I've honestly never had it with any of these setup even whilst driving at motorway speeds through standing water/extreme rain.

I'm not sure if 285 is recommended on a 6.5" rim - I think 285 on a 7" rim is pushing it a bit. Normally the tyre manufacturers will state on their website the min and max width rim that the tyre can be mounted on. I would check.

Thanks again Lucifus,

I was dead set on 255/85R16 tyres, but then started to see pics of Defenders 90s with 285/75R16 and got confused. Also, trying to go to northern Africa in a few months and think the volume of the wider tyres might be an advantage on the dunes.

The thing is that I just love Wolf rims, even if they are 6.5 wide. Most brands specify a minimum rim of 7.5 for the 285s.
Guys on the US seem to mount those tyres on 6.5 rims all the time, and the Ihana expedition guys done like 30000km with 285 BF mts on Wolfs without problems...

Hi Simon.pl,

Fitting 35" tyres is not really a matter of lift, but more of limiting upward travel with bigger bump stops.
You can have a 2 or 3 inch lift, but if upward travel stays the same then you might have some rub.
