Which one? I assume you mean the static one - if so its possible to remove it from behind the turbo with a filter strap from above Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Thanks Grafty, are you saying that I should be able to access the filter from below without removing the tray?

No, over the near side wing with a filter strap. A tip would be to loosen it with the strap then put a plastic bag such as a sandwich or bread bag round it and spin it off by hand. Then complete the Mensa test by extracting the said filter from behind the downpipe and heat shield. It can be done Thumbs Up

ahh found it now thanks, didn't realise it was that high up. Looks like it is going to be a pig to remove, old Tdi 200 was a lot easier...

Many thanks guys.

They are normally not too bad, I did have one that needed removal of the turbo in order to get it off though. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

As a last resort, hammer an old screwdriver through it if you can't get enough grip with a strap or chain. Best done on someone else's drive.

When you come to replace it there is a shorter version available that can make things a bit easier. Personally I've never had a problem with the standard. Island 4x4 sell them.

Don't forget the plastic bag, can make the experience a little less messy

You should be able to get the filter strap on. It can be a bit awkward, and you can only get a slight movement, but it should do it. I recall it can take a few attempts to get it moving. They are often unnecessarily over tightened. Neutral

Don't forget the plastic bag once it's loose - great advice given to me by JWL ( Thumbs Up ) when I first changed the filter.

I'm not sure if you can get enough clearance, but the hammer and screwdriver might get it started - but take care you don't hit anything else in the area.

The proper wrench is really good.

I'd also recommend the shorter filter if you wish to make things a little easier in the future. Thumbs Up

Don't give up - sometimes walking away, grabbing a brew, and having another go later with a different mindset makes all the difference! That works for me anyway..... Very Happy

Hammer the screwdriver right through the side and then around the side of the core - you'll have it off in seconds. Put an old tarp or big tray underneath.
