Rattle - prop shaft, or not??
So I have this rattle from somewhere underneath, towards the front end when I accelerate hard through first and second and to a lesser extent, third. Also more noticeable when hill starting or driving uphill. Not massively worrying, but not right either. Started noticing it about 5k ago, not getting better or worse.

I was convinced it was something to do with the front prop shaft as greasing it seemed to make it get better, although I am not sure if I'm imagining the improvement Evil or Very Mad

Tonight I removed the front prop and took it for a drive - rattle gone. Put the prop back on, rattle back.

However: on inspection of the prop, both UJ and the shaft itself I can find no play whatsoever in any of the joints, and this is on the bench in a vice really going at it with a lever from every angle. The joints all move smoothly, it seems absolutely beautiful. Or am I missing something?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else it could be that is front-drive related and and tests I could do? Transfer box or front diff related maybe?

Thanks!

Are the flanges tight on the diff and transfer box?

I had a rattle on overrun for a while and also looked at the driveshafts and it happened to be the rear flang off the transferbox that had a little play. It was only visible with the handbrake drum attached with the drum off I knew it had to be there but hardly could see it. I tightend the nut and the rattle is gone. (for now Shocked ) Roel

Thanks - that's got to be worth a look. Will check that and report back.

Just need to wait for a break in the weather, driveway has just turned into a small lake.

To close the case on this...

Worn front shock absorber bushes, picked up at the MOT. Replaced and rattle gone!

And there I was about to rebuild the front diff Smile
