transfer box bearing
I have replaced transfer output shaft bearing approx 10,000 mile ago but think it has started to cause a vibration again anyone know if I can replace this bearing with a higher spec one.

no the one that came out was a skf 6207 expedition the one I am going to replace it with is a c3 as this has more radial play so hopefully have less load and a longer life .(or so Iv'e been told)

hi there

sorry about hi jacking this topic but I have been chasing a vibration on my td5 110 since I had the gearbox repaired and the internals of a disco 1-1.22 transfer box fitted to my original transfer box at the same time I fitted a x brake which seems to amplify the vibration in to a knocking noise, I would be interested in knowing what your symptoms are i.e when the vibration is noticeable

cheers kevin

first sorry for late reply .OK after getting stuck and rocking the defender out I had what seamed to be a prop u.j.vibrating any way after a long search it was a bent output shaft NOT LIKE A BANANA BUT RUNNING OUT WHEN MEASURED ON A LATH and rough bearing .so replaced the shaft and to be honest put a cheap bearing in .the bearing had to be replaced after approx. 5000 mls so replaced with a SKF bearing this has lasted longer now I suspect I have a fault in the transfer box that is putting pressure on the output shaft bearing so have decided to try a bearing with a little more radial clearance (play) than the original spec don't want to strip transfer box as it works fine at the moment. The symptoms are rough vibration at 40-45 when accelerating hard or slight vibration when driven as I normally do like an old lady Embarassed .
Hope this has helped with diagnosis .

hi hilly

thanks for the reply my vibration was initially apparent when accelerating, but now is noticeable at idle even when out off gear so deep down I suspect its the dmf but I'm still hope I can find something less painfull to repair

cheers kevin

Check the crank pulley as these can cause a bad vibration. Does the engine make a chirp noise when you switch the ignition off? Ray

hi ray

thanks for the input I had heard that crank pulleys were prone to fail , there is no obvious signs of failure on mine but there is a definite vibration on the engine which cause the engine top cover to rattle, but I don't think it would be noticeable if I hadn't fitted the x brake ! think I'll have to let it develop !

cheers kevin
