I am going to end up putting a couple of rivnuts into my Defender's ali bodywork. What steps should I be taking to prevent corrosion whether disimilar metals, ali corrosion or the rivnut itself?
(Preferably things that don't involve hard-to-get lotions made of crushed himilayan anti-rust beetles - the range of products here in NZ is a lot more limited! ![]() |

What load will the rivnuts be taking?
Why not use aluminium rivnuts then it's a non-issue... |

'Wet assemble' it before squeezing the nut home using a decent sealant like Sikaflex. It will assist in slowing down any corrosion process that may commence. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Pardon my usually daft questions but ali panel with ali rivnut ..what happens when you stick a stainless bolt or the like into said rivnut? |

I coat the stainless bolt with Dynax S50 before screwing it into the Ali rivnut and that seems to stop any reaction. Basically wet assemble everything and you should be fine.

What Alex said. If using a mild steel or stainless bolt within the ali rivnut then use some barrier between the 2 metals.
Other than that I think sometimes people can get a bit overly anal about things. I've had ali rivnuts fitted to my defenders ali panels for years with no sign of corrosion at all, and they were fitted dry. |

Each to his own, while I have used Duralac before, after recommendation from a Defender wizzard I recently switched to Weicon anti corrosion paste, which I think is better. Duralac with time hardens up, experienced that first hand, Weicon remains soft/liquid which think is better for isolating two bodies in the long run and which in my opinion makes later undoing of for instance screws, etc. easier. Not sure about Weicon availability for you, but if you do a search on here with Weicon, you will find a few threads where I commented about it with pictures et al.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I'll be following the ali rivnut and wet assembly path I think. Right-ho, off to the hardware store!

Is this for the a bar surrounds into the wings?
If so I put a bolt with a nut on the back of the wing instead of a rivnut, with the thinking that as the bolt that holds the surrounds to the wing is only about an m4 so if for any reason in the future the a bar needs removing a reasonably small rivet could be placed in the holes and not look too bad if painted. Also you can put I little insulation tape on the shank of the bolt and use a plastic washer behind the nut so there should be no dissimilar metal corrosion. Thanks for the info Ray, yes it's for the bar surrounds (well, initially - I also want to mount an auxiliary fuse box under the seat at some stage). I might have to go the nut and bolt option as the local hardware store didn't have any ali rivnuts - just plain steel. I presume you get access to the nuts by taking the headlights out? I have liners under my wheel arches that stop me accessing the inside of the wings that way.
Cheers, Andy |

I popped a couple of the plastic clips off the arch liners, the centres just push through and then the clip pulls out (try and catch the centres from the back as you push them through) then the arch liner will move out of the way enough to get your hand in with a spanner. Ray

Try memfast. They sorted me with all my captive nuts and the quality was great. They even have rubber ones which are great for number plates and such like.
