prop shaft uj
I took my rear prop shaft off today after noticing some play in the uj on the rear diff end.

Once it was off, it was possible to observe free movement, but slight play on one axis; whilst the other axis was very stiff.

Taking apart the joint I find this:

Bearing on right is totally dry, and well worn on the spider.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how Censored is this? Can't understand how the joint can be that dry, and stiff, yet still actually work.

Been noticing a slight rattle/clanking noise when accelerating hard in low gears, or towing in low-range up hill. Hoping this is it.

Well perhaps not 10.

But really a UJ, once removed, is either f***ed or it's not - as you're not going to put it back on unless it's perfect.

So I showed mine to an ex-mechanic friend who rated mine an 8, but those look way worse!

Replaced it with a GKN part I got off ebay for £13.69. Rattle now cured! A nice straightforward, satisfying job with a positive outcome! Thumbs Up

If that is off your own vehicle then you should go and stand in the corner and hang your head in shame. That is terrible and must have been bad for a long time, not the sort of thing you could ignore for very long unless you have absolutely no mechanical sympathy.
