Would be interesting if anyone knows the area to understand what track they were on and it's legal status.

OS map shows no drivable routes on that fell. However, there are tracks show up there, including one that starts as a tarmac route, becomes an ORPA, then a bridleway, then a footpath, before joining the main road on top of the fell. Probably an old drovers road or a grouse moor service track. But a great example of how our great British ROWs system has been screwed up over the years.

I follow the Glossop & Edale Mountain Rescue teams on Twitter, and there are many more walkers rescued off the moors/hills than 4x4 drivers. I don't condone driving off-piste at all, but there are many more walkers who go out ill prepared and venture off the correct paths and they don't get pilloried in the media for their actions. The cost to the Mountain Rescue Teams in both funds and possible life is not to be underestimated.

Cheers

Simon

I would rather hope that someone recovers the vehicles and sends the prats a seriously expensive bill with all profits going to the Mountain Rescue teams and then when they have paid the bills slap some hefty fines on for off piste driving.

If there where they werent meant to be it sounds harsh but the cars should be recovered and taken straight to the crusher, no fines or second chances just straight to scrap.
Would certainly set an example.

Injuries and sudden illness aside, it really gets my goat when mountain walkers call out rescue teams (though this is the first time I have heard of persons in a 4x4 vehicles doing so).

With very few exceptions walkers call out mountain rescue teams because they are ill prepared for the climb, inadequately clothed are wearing the wrong footwear etc. That line from the article ‘it was sunny and clear when we started’, I have heard countless times when hill fog descends and temperatures drop sharply and panic kicks in.

Another one I have head more times than you would believe is when asked why did you not had a map and a compass with you, is replied with, ‘I do not need one as I have a terrific sense of direction’. Yeah, then how come you’re lost! Or when asked why they went up a three and half thousand foot high mountain in a T shirt and shorts without any spare warm clothing, reply, ‘well it’s not Everest is it’ People die on our mountains and hills every year most of the ones who do is because they are idiots.

Or idiotic parents who take young children on dangerous mountain paths without the necessary skills to do so , like the Liverpool parent who took his eight year old along Grib Goch, the eight year old fell to his death. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..
