'portable' spilt charging system
Is anyone familiar with any kind of 'portable' split charging system? What I am after is some kind of device that would plug into a fag lighter and charge a leisure battery whilst on the move, and which would be swappable between vehicles, depending on which one I use.

It may be that this is not possible anyway, but all suggestions welcome...... Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

You'd need something to limit the current to a level that the lighter socket fuse can handle.

Otherwise you would have a 'spilt' charging system

What about putting a 12S socket close to where you will travel the said battery, you could fit one at the rear next to the tow hitch for future use and 'T' into the charging circuit and put a socket inside. That way you'll have all the advantages of only charging when the engine is running and you'll be future proofed for when you get older and feel you need a tin tent Laughing

If you want something that is transferable then a set of crocadile clips with a fuse and the right plug for the lighter socket but as Laurie has said be carefull of the amps involved

About 3 mtrs of thin (5 amp?) twin flex should lower the current suficiently.
Just monitor it's temperature when charging an 'empty' battery.

Coil it up nicely on top of the crash pad under the windscreen and you can use it to keep the windscreen demisted Laughing

May be a little late posting but what you might need is a regulated DC-DC converter like this one...

Its primary use would be to regulate the output voltage, but by doing so it can also limit its input current draw to something you could feasibly get from a cigarette lighter socket - just get one rated to less than ten amps or so. Won't be too bulky either. Hope that helps!!! Smile

In short.

Lesuire battery connected to a high current relay to control split charge.

Light on the box up signal charging

Voltage display (switched to avoid parasitic drain)

Discharge protector to avoid battery being drained. (Black box in middle)

Anderson on side (direct to battery)

CTEK connector on battery for top up

(Some shonkey wiring, could do with a proper multi fuse holder etc but works)

the only thing I would say about putting the electrics in the lid

are risk of fumes when charging from the battery ( even if its sealed battery as they normally still have a regulated valve )
1, corrosive
2 explosion if they is a spark
