Engine goes cold on tickover

Hi all

Hoping for some inspiration from you guys, as the main dealer has given up on me. And my warranty is about to expire anyway.

I've found over the winter (courtesy of some long-running major roadworks near Nottingham) that if I sit stationary for more than 5 or 10 minutes the temp gauge starts to droop. After more than 10 mins the gauge is at the bottom of the white section and the heater feels cooler than normal (but not cold).

Once I start off again driving normally the temperature gradually picks up again as usual.

The thermostat seems ok in general as the temp stays right in the middle in normal driving.

I wonder if it might be the viscous fan coupling? How can I test that?

Is it easy to convert the Puma to an electric fan instead?

I think it's normal. Mine is the same, isn't this why they sell rad muffs? 110 Hardtop

ditto also think normal, not burning much fuel at tick over so not generating much heat hence why a lot of diesels have aux heaters DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

If you have the heater blowing on hot then you would be surprised how much cooling effect on engine it will have .

diesels dont make much heat when ticking over , could leave one ticking over all day after cold start and bet it would never get near running temp

Haha, blimey, that's reassuring. Will never worry about overheating then - it wasn't even all that cold.

Will invest in a blanket and a few cable ties then.

Surprisingly, the dealer didn't even suggest that 'they all do that'.

Yes I pick my lad up from college some nights and when it's cold weather with the heater on on tick over my ultraguage shows around 40 degrees Celsius, not the 78 degrees or so normal tootling temperature

is it just me that doesn't get rad muffs?

Surely when its not warm, theres no water moving through the radiator anyway.... thats what the thermostat is for!!

So how would a rad muff help? Cheers, David

Inclined to agree, if the thermostat is OK why would you need one DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

the engine block/hoses etc will act like a rad in cold weather , stopping cold air being pushed in to engine bay will help with warm times

how cold it has to be to help i don't know

I had the same on my 300tdi Disco while waiting on the ferry. Heating on and wind from ahead heating stayed warm but temp gauge went down. Roel

Pick the revs up a bit to 1200-1500 it will warm up again

130's have feeling's as well you know

Mine appears to be super critical of the water level, if it drops too far then it doesn't appear to circulate much hot water through the heater at idle. If it's up to level or slightly over there's no problem and maintains hot even at tick over

I started with nothing and still have most of it left!
