I have bought and fitted a tracker. I have one that has no contract or regular fees except keeping the sim card topped up. It uses GPS and GSM, I have hidden it out the way and it's hard wired. It uses just £2 a month phone top up and you can text it to ask it where it is or log onto a website that gives you a map showing its location as a icon. The webpage allows you to have your own login and you can get all sorts of info from it, track in real time or see where its been what speed it travelled and all sorts. It is brilliant, it cost just £55 and the company I bought it from were extremely helpful, ringing me unprompted to explain what it does and how it works. It came ready to go all set up for me with money on the sim, the unit is small being about 100x40x10mm. Good to hear and will check out. Cost of ownership is always key with these devices assuming the quality of the base kit is ok. First approach is to try and stop the Defender being stolen / stripped...but if it does go then a tracker is probably your only hope of seeing it again. You say this unit uses both GPS and GSM, are the manufactures claiming it will work if (along with your vehicle) if it is placed in a sea container ? Not of the same make but reassuringly when I drove my Defender to work onto one of these:

These trackers are a great idea and work really well.
They are cheaper to run than Skytag but it is unlikely that the Police will take instruction from individuals whereas as Skytag have a proven track record of Police attendance and even helicopter deployment. It really depends on your budget and how 'involved' you want to get as to your choice of unit. |

Hi, well I do not think it would work in a steel container as the instructions say keep away from large areas of metal. Where I have installed it is out of sight well hidden but not near too much metal. I dont want to go into detail where it is obviously, but it is hidden and works great with accuarcy within a few feet. I appreciate the police cant track it as easily but I can, I am sure the police would be grateful for me saying my car has been stolen and its on Princes st. 110 Hardtop

Tracking solutions and the claims of GPS equipped etc are of interest to me as i use several GSM/Iridium solutions with work. Using either GPS as the primary fixing solution or GSM. Reporting either via GSM or GPRS data links as well as SMS reporting and some solutions using Iridium to report the fix.
One of the problems with GSM reporting is that unless it has a frequency agile back up, say for example VHF, then one just needs a mobile phone jammer and the system is screwed. I use ECM (for mobile phone amongst other things) jamming. I have a personal jammer which will drop most mobile phone signals within 20m which is enough to ghost a vehicle's tracking solution through to kit that will push out a 100m bubble around a car. VHF although does have its limitations that is it a line of sight broadcast signal, all be it with better range than UHF. VHF won't give a fix like a GSM/GPS system it will however give a bearing and through signal strength and indication of range to the device, more helpful for airborne tracking than ground based as buildings/terrain can get in the way. As a cheap and dirty solution it works, but be aware of the limitations they are not infallible and the better solutions come with an independent back up for transmitting the position fix or indicating location. Interesting too and I agree with your 'summary'. Probably the bottom line here is a car thief with low skills and or IQ stands a chance of being tracked by some or most trackers with varying degrees of success. A thief with skills knowledge and possibly kit, is a very different proposition. I definitely know of a specialist vehicle dealer, who actually installs these systems on most of the vehicles they sell, who had a high value car loaded onto a sea container, that couldn't be traced, other tricks like the jamming techniques you refer to may possibly have been involved, they, the tracker company and the police don't know. This theft was undertaken with transport and timing planned, on a vehicle of higher than 'normal Defender money'... but shows that like all security it only provides degrees of protection, our choice (if taken) is to decide how far to adjust / improve from that supplied by LR. I think like a lot of things it has to be taken in context, after all the saying if they want it bad enough they will steal it is one we all know. But for a low cost (£55) then it is a good buy, if it gets stolen and it gets to a steel container then at least you have something for the police to go on. The tracking website gives historical movement so you will have a record with the route it took right up to when it became hidden complete with times, speed, a route on a map etc etc. If your landy is stolen by opportunist thieves without access to jammers then you can track it to where it's parked up within a few feet. Hopefully getting the police to it straight away before anything happens to it. Forgot to mention it is hard wired but it does have a battery so if the wires are found that power it they can cut them but the unit will be still working for a time, where it is hidden they would have a hard time finding it
 tracing the wires would take time, it took me a long time to route them and conceal them.
I have a alarm PIR light / video camera which as well as illuminating the drive and starting to record video it also sends a signal to a receiver in the house, so if the PIR is tripped at night (it's placed "looking" at my Landy on my drive) I can run outside and hopefully catch them at it (thieves) if they drive away before I get outside I can track where it is going at the same time as getting the rozzers on the case. With the fact my bonnet is wired to the engine with 8mm stainless steel wire and ABUS padlocked, I have security bolts, my door hinge bolts and bonnet bolts are filled with resin, spare wheel is locked with a wire cable and good ABUS lock, locking wheel nuts all round. Then I have an alarm and immobiliser now this tracker, I am happy I have my security sorted - if they still get it well I think they must be pretty clever. 110 Hardtop |
