Very jealous of your barns and vehicles Jeremy!

I'd have a go at patching it.

Lets face it its a series 1, you do your best and that be it added to its history. There are some out there that have been repaired with road signs or bits of bean can or fence post so your attempt is always going to be better than rot. and a nut and bolt restoration with lots of very perfect welds never looks right.

If it was me I would strip it down (which doesn't take long with a series) and just weld it up.

I'd do the same on mine but my defender is also my daily drive so can't afford to have it off the road that long Big Cry

As you will be aware there is precedent for this. At one stage in 80" production the press tool used for stamping out the curved part of the bulkhead broke or was damaged, and to keep production running bulkheads were hand-built with simple folded panels, very easy to imitate.

my old 80 had a all aluminimum bulkhead and was told there was only 100 ever made

I think that 80" ali bulkheads are a bit like Type 35 Bugattis - there are more of them now than were ever actually built!

They are certainly extremely rare, 100 sounds about right. It is an easy shape to recreate, although I'd do it in steel, not ali, for ease and durability.

im sure under construction rules and regs you have to have steel bulkhead as a fire wall , not sure when that rule started maybe that's why they never made many.

or maybe made for export or something

They were only made to keep producution going whilst the press tool for the steel bulkhead was repaired, no other reason.

The 80" aluminium bulkhead has a steel frame but the footwell panels etc are alloy. I'm not sure if C&U now requires a steel bulkhead, but it certainly didn't then - most vintage cars have an aluminium bulkhead (or "firewall").

What a lovely 80". I'm not jealous. At all. Of it. Or the barn full of Land Rovers, and the other barn, and the other one...I'm not sure who has more rarities, Jeremy or Phil Bashall! Twisted Evil 2011 110 USW

With that early-looking 'FF' registration number, it must have been registered when new in North Wales, not far from where I am now. Merioneth, I think.

If I can find out anything to do with its history, from the local archives, I'll let you know.

Many years ago, we bought an 86", which turned out to be a factory prototype, first owned by Sir John Black, chairman of Standard-Triumph, who later took up farming in North Wales, I believe. That one was registered NAC 750.
