Poor BMW owner was able to take pictures with telelens how his relatively recent BMW was stolen within 1 minute.
Happened in The Netherlands and the movie comments are in Dutch language, but still interesting to see how easy it apparently is. So not only Defenders...... In a nutshell, the comments are that the owners parked their BMW 320 and walked up a hill, smaller white Beemer parks behind them and touches their 320, 2 guys get out apparently checking if they caused any damage but in reality were checking if all was clear..., they both walk to the side of his car and owner thinks they are going to put a note with their name and phone number behind his wiper  , but one guy just gets in and behind the wheel while owner starts running down the hill, and both Beemers drive off. The white Beemer had a stolen license plate. 
So not only Defenders.  At least many of us use pedal locks, etc.

Google "BMW stolen without keys" and you might form a view that they're easier to steal than a Defender...

By using a cloned key most likely. A blank programmed in the car being stolen through the OBD port.
As I understand it though there should have been a software change to prevent this so if it had been serviced that would be impossible. www.td5.org |

make the obd socket live with ign on only ,not live all the time or have a switch ( hidden ) on the neg feed
a programmer cant work then |

Reroute the original one to another place and place a dummy with enough volt running through it to burn the thief's laptop?

Or even re-route and hide the OBD socket and have an immobiliser act as a break in the circuit of the socket, onlt making it live when needed by the garage or if you have one, a scanguage. Oh and as you say, wire up a fake OBD to the battery.

only thing with making obd socket live only with ign is some dianostic tools need you to switch on then off then on etc to talk to ecus .
move obd or switch in earth would be better . put a dummy one back in orringal hole so any one trying will think its just not working usual thing applys if only you know is best |

Same reason they don't make them waterproof or secure the bonnets and doors I suppose!

Absolutely. I have a very complicated system in place now. Takes me 20 mins to explain the garage. Just hope the fitters are trustworthy  I have a number of options if I feel the system has been compromised though. |

Just chop the OBD socket off, solder on *another* type of socket, and make up an adaptor with the OBD socket soldered to the mating new plug to suit the one you just fitted.
Keep said lead out of the vehicle. then no-one can plug anything in! |
