Due to the fact my Defender gets irregular use I am regularly topping up my battery with a charger which can be irksome. I am thinking of a permanent fit of one of these smaller discreet chargers and an aircraft grade electrical connector on the side of the seat box to connect it to the mains. The positive charging lead could also be wired through a pushbutton illuminated switch to prevent backfeeding the charger when not in use. Connect the unit, push the button and away you go.

Why not install the 12S plug and use the adapter for the C-tek as is offered on the disco3 sister forum. Very easy.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I have considered the idea of a Ctek charging through the tow socket, however my vehicle sits outside and apart from the mains connection and the throw of a switch everything would be secure and weatherproof. Well as weatherproof and as secure as the inside of a Defender can get. It could be permanently fitted and connected and just throw the switch periodically to charge.

Good idea - and just fit a diode to prevent back-feeding perhaps?

I have given a little more thought to my plan and by feeding the live battery feed from my Blue Sea with a 20 amp fuse I could switch the negative battery feed through a Carling illuminated switch which will prevent backfeeding when switched off. Unlike a diode I'll also have an indication when it's charging.

Sounds good to me Smile Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

I have a C Tek battery charger which specifically says it can charge with the battery in the car with leads connected etc, and I have the "easy connect" leads to make it easier.
However, reading the Puma's owner's handbook, it says that the battery has to be removed from the vehicle to be charged.
How do you guys charge your Puma's battery should the need arise?
Thanks, Pickles.

And when you are driving?

That's a good idea, thanks K9F!
I have the CTek in the seatbox, this way I can see when it is connected and it is good to be able to disconnect to prevent backfeeding.

Welcome. A local Chandlery to you may be able to provide the switch quickly and reasonably priced. As stated you could then hardwire the charger and save faffing about.

Thumbs Up

K9F, I already have the charger hardwired, together with an inverter, to a marine grade mains connection on the rear of the truck. I also have a spare Carling switch on the Mudstuff Dash console.
So, just need to do the wiring. Wink Cheers, Vincent

I do not use it much, just for charging phones or laptop if they can not be charged from 12V directly. Cheers, Vincent

Decided to go ahead with the fit. The charger I used was this one....

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/battery-char...4E4F4E4526

Sits perfectly in the Nakatanenga glovebox. Cut the crocodile clips off and ran the positive through a 20 amp Carling switch back to my Blue Sea fusebox and fitted a 15 amp fuse. The negative I also fed back to the Blue Sea and connected it to the negative bus. Effectively when charging I am 'backfeeding' the battery through the Blue Sea fusebox.
The mains lead I fitted a three pin fixed aerograde small bulkhead electrical receptacle. I also made a short lead with the corresponding electrical connector on and a standard domestic plug.
Ultimately connect an extension lead throw the Carling switch and it's charging. No faffing about lifting the seat etc. The Carling switch and electrical receptacle I fitted in the passenger footwell on the hinged fusebox panel under the dash.
