A bit
 , but still a question about greasing electrics...
For electric connections including lights connections, towing sockets, underhood relays like those for my fogs and DRLs, is spraying their contacts regularly with WD-40 the right thing to do? I am not sure anymore what to think about WD-40, some here like it, some not... I thought WD-40 has a water repellent effect, so guess it is a good thing for all what I mentioned above? That is what I occasionally do at present anyway... Eric You never actually own a Defender. WD-40 has a indeed water repellent effect (hence its name: it was the 40th attempt to create a water repellent formula.
For the towing socket and lights connections, I apply very copious amounts of acid free vaseline, as I learned from my very good Land Rover specialized mechanic. Vincent, thanks for the history link. Never thought of wikipedia-ing this product.
Reading all that, guess what I am doing is ok. I actually started using WD-40 for the towing sockets more than 2 years ago, after I had to use a trailer for the first time when the SVX was just 3 years old.... And I found that the inside of the 12N towing socket was entirely corroded and useless. Land Rover dealer replaced it still under warranty, and since then I am spraying inside of both the new 12N socket and the later installed 12S socket liberally with WD-40 every few weeks, certainly each time after a car wash. The tow socket gets a monthly squirt of electrical contact cleaner on mine as does any electrical plug that I disconnect.

No WD40 is a water dispersant and light lubricator NOT a cleaner. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Some years ago a mechanic/friend told me not to overdo the cca as it requires thinner lead plates that can die faster in winter and if discharged too far. Admittedly, I always use deep-cycle batteries now, so I'm no expert... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

WD40 is oil based which can create poor contact on sensitive switches,it also attracts dirt making contacts even worse,something I found out years ago when the throttle position sensor on mi Escort started playing up,told by a fitter to clean it with PROPER electrical contact cleaner and not WD, never had another problem after that (also never bought WD again either).So use contact cleaner and a dialectic grease (silicon) to water/dustproof the connectors. I used to use WD40 on mi motorbikes to help keep the corrosion at bay,but it cooks on hot parts making everything look like a sh*ty frying pan,silicon spray doesn't cook,doesn't rot rubber,doesn't attract dust,lasts a lot longer and it's a lot better waterproofer than WD

Eventually pulled my finger out and replaced the battery. Ended up with a Varta H3. 830CCA / 100ah from the local motor factors. So will see what the starting is like when cold.
It took a while to clean up the +ve terminal as it was covered in hard dried crusty stuff. When cleaned up, I covered the positive terminal in Vaseline and then smeared it over the top as well. On fitting the battery, it meant my 2nd battery would not fit in the seat box, so this was relocated to the back of the Landy. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
