Transfer box - changing to a Disco box?
Hi,

I know this topic has covered before but I would really appreciate
some further opinion. I've been offered a 'swap' for my transfer box (TD5 110)
with one from a 2002 Disco 2. I 'm keen, but would like to know from
those who have made the change is it definitely worthwhile, do you lose much
'Tractability' and does it help get rid of the box 'whine' on the motorway (Do Discos
have a quieter gearing? ). I don't pull heavy trailers, plus have had a standard BAS tune.

Many Thanks.

Hi,

Yes
No
No

Hope that helps!! Thumbs Up

Seriously though, I changed mine but in the end went for an Ashcroft box as the tranny box I considered was a second-hand Disco TDi200 box, but my spanner-man (MiD Engineering) advised against it as a tweaked TD5 would have a fair chance of wrecking it - something to do with the cross-drilled input shaft, or rather lack of Sad
As I like my 90, and want to keep it for a while, I decided a 'known quantity' tranny box was a better bet Thumbs Up Glad I did as when I opened up the Disco box for a look-see, the innards were full of emulsified oil-and-silt mix, which would have been expensive... Shocked

Bear in mind that this era of disco transfer may not have the difflock linkage on it... you may need to swap some bits over or buy the relavent parts (Ashcrofts springs to mind) to make the disco box difflock-able.

Thanks for the advice. Thumbs Up With reference to transfer box noise, I had in my mind somewhere that I was told about a 'Q' denoted gear set, which meant the gears ran quieter than the standard Defender. Have I imagined this? Question
I would really like to lose the whine at motorway speeds.

You shouldn't be able to hear the transfer box at motorway speeds. Certainly not over the engine, road and wind noise anyway. If there's a noticeable whine then something's amiss.

There is a Q variant yes with quieter gears, can't remember what it was fitted to though I am afraid!

The whine is noticeable on slow (55+) motorway speeds, and noisier the faster you go (not that I go that fast..!).
Not having driven anyone else's TD5 I assumed it was normal.

Mine doesn't have the Q gears (not that I know of anyway) and it's not unduly noisy.

Although having said that, i've not driven any great distance in a puma so can't really compare.

Mine has a road speed related whine at anything over 45. It gets drowned out by other noise at about 65. I had the oil changed and it did quieten it down a bit. Its always done for as long as I have had the vehicle, and has got no louder. Previous owner also said it had always made the noise, So I too presumed they all did it.

I have not swapped the gears yet, but am planning to rebuild my own box. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Thanks for the replies . The noise from mine also 'goes' at 'higher' speeds due to being lost in the general racket. My main reason for the transfer box change is quieter motorway driving, and hopefully the lower engine revs will significantly help. Out of interest, if not all TD5's had a Q box, is there anyway of telling on the box casing etc ?

Cheers
