Good evening all,
I am looking to buy some 30mm hub centric wheel spacers to fit with standard boosts wrapped I km2 tyres. By doing a quick search I can see some people have used 'rakeway', are these the one to go for? I also noticed a firm called bulldog that make what look like a quality product. Can anyone shed some light on this company? Also, if I was to fit spacers, would I get any imbalance? I have read a few problem stories on google but I would have thought if they were hub centric and a quality, balanced product, I shouldn't have any problems. If there is anything else I should be aware of, please let me know. Reason for fitment: improve looks, improved turning circle (with steering stops adjusted). Thanks in advance. Simon |

Do you notice any wheel wobble through the steering? |

I had plain spacers with 305 85 16 hankook mts. Never had a wobble. Kept killing my wheel bearings though! Gone down to 285s bfg ats and are lAsting longer!! 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

I'm running 265 so I'm hoping not to have any premature wheel bearing issues.
I guess only time will tell  |

Mine (Terrafirma) on 255/85 steel. No wobbles & the broader track has given slightly better stability. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. No wheel wobble at all, I can't see how wheel spacers increase the bearing wear issues more than modulars/8 spokes etc, I have modulars on the 90, and boosts with 30mm spacers on the 110 and both vehicles have the same track width.

£100 for a set of 4, 30mm spacers including nuts.
Price may have changed up or down by now, I bought them back in may of this year. |

Do you mean you don't understand the physical difference between them or just that the differnece has marginal impact? |

No, I don't mean I don't understand, what I meant is that if the tyre is in contact with the ground the same distance out from the hub, what difference is it if you have spacers or a greater offset wheel. We often hear of spacers being bad for wheel bearing wear, why don't we hear the same about modular/ 8 spoke wheels.

Both have the same effect on bearing wear. You get additional bearing wear as a result of the load being further from the bearing and thus applying additional leverage upon them.
In my experience (of both spacers and of modular wheels) it's not really anything to worry about, the increased wear is marginal and if you regularly check and adjust your wheel bearings you'll probably not notice. HTH Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. |
