Been searching through all the 'clunk' topics on here and other forums and there's so many possibilities!
Would anyone be kind enough to take a look at the attached video and let me know what you think?
I naturally assumed UJ clunk, but getting under there and having a good feel about, the UJ's feel pretty tight. I will do them anyway as I don't know their history, but they aren't part of the clunk.
Basically accelerating, if I'm not ultra smooth off the clutch, I get this clunkm especially when queing and stop starting ... I think I get it on a shift to, but to loud to hear.
The clunk seems to be diff based, but front left wheel, there's quite a pronounced clunk to. There's no movement in the diffs input in terms of up, down, left and right etc. Just rotational ...
Is my diff fubard?
On a side note, I put diff locks on today just to try them (only been driving the landy for a week although had it for a while) and the light came on. then turned off and dropped it back into normal high ... Then when I moved it, I thought I'd try again, but this time no light came on? The change lever is very sticky to!
Like I say, that's just a side question, the main one is the clunking :p!?
Video of Clunk:
(This forum have an embed video input? All the usual dont work!?).
Thats normal right? you can adjust the back lash reducing free play I once spent alot of time on a defender adjusting each diff tightning up gear selector diff and refitting output and hubs all felt very perfect
There is a grub screw/bolt inside that moves the diff Pinion in or out. There is a measurement for the gap in the teeth. Wow its been some years since transmissions on my mechanics course lol. Perhaps ill have To make time to adjust mine sooner then o I can publish a how to
That could sort the problem, just not sure it 'feels' like its that easy a fix, but worth a shot non the less! Would save me a lot of money because I would no doubt somehow talk myself into some lockers if the diff was gone ...
Could partly be my fault as I learned my basic skills in the army. My assumption that a workshop manual was incorrect as apparently its not a normal workshop job. The pirate link really lays it out lol I too require picture stimulation lol. certainly demonstrates how to adjust although the thread is about replacement
