Since some motorways have more then 3 lanes, then left, middle and right lane would not apply.

Lane 1 is the left hand lane and should be the lane you are drinking in UNLESS OVERTAKING, when you might me in lane 2 or three etc

Also I have never understood why people persist in talking about "the outside lane" (actually nearest the centre or inside of the motorway) and "the inside lane" (nearest the outside of the motorway)! Why not use the less ambiguous "lane 1", "lane 2" etc which always works?

I've never really thought about that, but I don't see how 1, 2 and 3 helps? Surely it depends which lane you start with as number 1? I think the 'inside' and 'outside' terminology probably makes more sense for most people. Left lane, middle lane and right lane would probably be most clear, but I think a lot of people struggle with right and left. More than would let on anyway!

Generally, you read from the left to the right, correct? So I find Lane 1,2 and 3 easier. Lane 1 being on the left and 3 being on the right. Inside and outside lane just seems confusing! An engine to TDi for!

Don't think you should be drinking in any lane Brendan! Not if you're driving as well anyway. Thumbs Up 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Fair enough. I suppose it just depends what you're used to and the way your brain works. I find inside and outside more straightforward than numbers. But I like words, not numbers! Thumbs Up 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Bow down Bow down It's not just me who find the drivers so bad- For a second I thought maybe I am just being picky.

Police have been mentioned- I have covered over 1000 miles in the past week, and haven't seen a single Traffic police car Confused I have also noticed that in town I see cars not indicating and the Police just sit there and ignore it.

I would be the Traffic Policeman from Hell- I would warn so many people on a daily basis never mind the fact there would be a booking every 30mins at least.

I've sort of noticed that too - don't often see marked police cars on the motorways too often (although plenty of Highways Agency trucks). However, and almost without fail, I'll see someone (or multiple someones!) will have been stopped on the M5 by an unmarked car (probably travel on it 2/3 times per week).

That said, was travelling down the M5 a couple of weeks ago when I came to a hold up where a lorry had shed part of its load. Was just after a services, and the traffic was backed up past the junction. Copper was walking up the road between the cars, checking that the there wasn't any more debris - he went to walk over to the hard shoulder just as massively impatient BMW driver comes storming down there past the stationary traffic, nearly hitting said police officer Shocked. Fortunately for the driver he stopped in time, and unfortunately for me the traffic started moving again fairly shortly after that, so I didn't get to witness the full wrath that was being directed towards the driver... 2013 Defender 110 XS DCPU

Lane 1 is of course the lane that is always present, ie the left-most lane. Some roads, usually dual-carriageways, have optionally lanes 2, 3, and sometimes 4 etc. Simple.

You will *never* hear a transport professional refer to "the outside lane" or "the slow lane" etc.

"Nearside" and "offside" are correct terms, though not generally used for lane identification, meaning rather to the left or right respectively of the driver/vehicle. It is a little-know fact that the near/off sides do not change in foreign countries which are vulgar enough to drive on the right; the nearside is still the left, etc.

Not motorway related, but Ive noticed when driving in lane 1 of a dual carriageway that motorists wanting to join from a side road to the right, think its ok to just pull out straight into lane 2. It causes me to brake sharply as I think they are pulling out into my lane. Instead they see that lane 2 is free and pull straight out into it, leaving me no choice but to undertake them due to my road speed.

Dont know if that makes sense? Sad
