Love being in the first lane and seeing the 3rd lane all grind to a stop while 1st carries on.

Yes but that's when they all want to use lane 1 then.

Inside lane./ outside lane debate....

When you overtake someone what do you do- You pull out. I can't see why it would refer to the lane closest to the centre reservation as you will NEVER drive on the other side during normal circumstances therefore it is on the outside of the part you are concerned with.

also, Where the driver is in the car- you sit on the right, therefore if you look left you are looking inside your car, where if you look right it is the outside.

I have heard people refer to them as L/R/middle, near/far/ middle but never 1,2,3.

Even when in Western Australia they referred to it as inside/outside/middle.

What does it all matter though? Unless we indicate the Left/inside/1 lane as the 'middle' lane and then maybe people will sit in it Rolling with laughter

Hee hee, I love this thread - so much of what I feel has been said so well already. It's easy to get wound up about driving in the UK and become a little aggressive - luckily I have chilled out a little since I became the owner of a Defender.
Mr. Green

I would like to get the 80-odd mph restriction (reckon it kicks in at 87 on mine) removed from my Defender because I have had a few awkward wazzocks who obviously think being overtaken by a Defender is unacceptable and continue to speed up as I start to pass! Doing more than 87mph in a Defender is something everyone should try once. Whistle

However looking at the facts our motorways are safe.

Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety claim:

While limits are higher in other European coun- tries such as France or Germany, casualty rates on these roads are also significantly greater. The number of deaths on motor- ways per billion vehicle kilometres in Germany is more than 75% higher than in the UK; in France it is nearly 125% higher.

Not every one is perfect, lots of people are not thoughtfull enough of their surroundings, don't look ahead, but I have never been in fear of my life on a UK motorway in 20 years of driving, but I have on a German Motorway, Moroccan Motorway and Spanish Motorways. And the nearest death experience was on a 2 lane German Autobahn and it would have involved my wife and then 3 year old daughter. It would have resulted in the death if the other driver if I could have caught him, it was mindless testosterone fuelled stupidity from a middle class X5 driver that we would only ever get from a teenage twocker in this country. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper

Motorways are generally safe because RTCs involve moving objects ( notice generally )

Urban roads are deemed safe because of the lower speeds involved

However country lanes involve unrestricted roads with the NSL and big static objects ( trees and livestock ) is simple maths and physics Thumbs Up

Oh re the rest of Europe you can prove anything with percentages Rolling with laughter

It doesn't really matter of course, at least for 90% of the time, however the fact that this discussion has taken place at all highlights perfectly that fact that the inside/outside teminology is ambigous (and also falls down completely when there are three or more lanes).

It was in order to come up with a standard and completely unambiguous nomenclature that transport professionals and those for whom ambiguity is not acceptable started using the lane 1 etc convention.

As you say, most of the time it doesn't matter, but it does bug me when our local radio station has traffic reports warning of, for example, debris in the outside lane (or worse, the "middle lane" when there are four!)

Mind you the same reporters talk about "ongoing accidents" (what does that mean - cars are still ploughing into the wreckage perhaps?), and also say things like "there is an accident heading west on the M27"! I guess it once again comes down to a lack of understanding of the English language and how to use it precisely, and a lack of imagination! Or maybe I'm morphing into Victor Meldrew!

I've certainly seen a few things that fall into the "accident looking for somewhere to happen" category, but somehow I don't think that is quite what they mean!

I still reckon that the one thing that would make the roads immediately far safer, and improve driving standards enormously, would be the compulsory fitment of a razor sharp prong in the middle of the steering wheel and removal of the driver's seatbelt. If you know that even a minor accident would inevitably kill you, you'd drive carefully.

I think the reason why the British Motorway system has less fatalities is because you spend 80% of your time going 20mph!! Rolling with laughter

I have to agree on this.

I think NCAP has inadvertently made people worse drivers. I used to work with an old-boy who had owned a Ford Sierra from new (was about 20 years old at this point). He had just paid £150 for spares to repair it where one of the guys in the workshop said he should have just sold it and got something better 'Like his Renault'.

In the end the Sierra beat the Renault in most aspects from power, mpg, tax etc. BUT then the NCAP rating was questioned. The Sierra being too old didn't have a rating, and therefore it is a inferior vehicle. The old boy's resopnce was- "If you are preparing because you expect to be in a crash you shouldn't be on the road"..... The other guy at this point ws speachless.

People drive faster/ more risky if they believe they will survive a crash Rolling Eyes

Then once indicating they do nothing- they don't slow down a fraction and flash to let me out and they don't move across to the outside lane to make room Rolling Eyes

That really annoys me when I'm in the Motorhome. Set the cruise to 62mph/100kph which is a nice cruising speed for it, catch up (with usually older men), pull out to overtake, get level, they accelerate. I pull back in behind them, they slow down. Evil or Very Mad Craig Rogers

Second that! It seems to happen a lot with vehicles like the Defender, and I wonder whether deep in the subconscious of some drivers there is something that makes them think that a Landrover (agricultural truck) should be behind them, in the same way that you don't want to be behind a tractor. The number of times I have pulled out to overtake someone who's been driving at, say, 50mph for miles, only to have them accelerate alongside me, is countless. They are a real menace in so many ways.

However since Pete "The Magician" Bell at BAS transformed my Defender into a veritable time machine this is much less of a problem, since usually I can out-accelerate them now. Thumbs Up

Such a nice feeling that, they match you up to 60mph then you press that bit harder and leave them sat there Thumbs Up
