I know it's not popular but I've used TomTom on the iPhone across Europe and never had a problem. Not used it so much in the UK though so perhaps it's just the maps there - come to think of it, my Navigon (Nokia) has screwed up a few times in the UK - sometimes lost the road by a hundred metres or so
My TomTom is on my iPhone3GS and sits in a TomTom cradle, so it's for navi, handsfree, music, recharging etc. Cool thing is, due to the iTunes store, it is also loaded onto the iPad3 and iPod touch (an old one) where it works in its own cradle in the Audi. Obviously you take it with you all the time as it's on your phone

I buy my own phones !! 
At the moment I can't justify upgrading on cost terms, due to the fact that my 3 yr old 3 is fine for what I "need" it to do. Yes, a 5 (or 5s) would be nice but at the moment I'm living off my redundancy pay and want to make it last as long as poss before I "need" to go back to work!  Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

I've just set up my iPad Mini with TomTom software and a ram mount holder. Nice big screen and split screen when approaching junctions is very handy. The big screen is also good for memory map OS Maps 2013 Aintree Green 110 Station Wagon SX

+1x2 (Wife and me) My daughter just got her 5 stolen in Glasgow and is borrowing a 4S from a friend - says there's no real difference

Apple maps uses TomTom data for turn by turn navigation. It only works properly on iPhone 4S and 5 or iPad 3 or mini though. On older models it uses a half and half implementation which is pretty much useless. NavFree or Google maps work Ok on older models though.
I like the Apple maps implementation but still occasionally use NavFree that uses open source map data. This has the advantage that if you find a new road layout you can fix the data yourself. I gave my Garmin to my mum because I just don't use it since I started using my phone for navigation. Pam can have my iPhone 5 when I get a 5S  http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

my TomTom 610 mounting braket broke after 13 yrs use a couple of weeks ago so had to look at a replacement
Took the modern route and bought a Samsung note (mini-ipod size) for less than the cost of a high end Sat nav and down loaded CoPilot on to it. (with life long map upgrades) Driven about 3k miles with it so far & Love it !!
It's been great with the larger screen, and the ability to run View Ranger for 4x4 response at the same time, and giving the options to show movies when camped up at night, bluetooth with the radio as well for talking books etc.. got it mounted on the dash infront of the clock, but only one issue was it gets very warm when the upper heater vents are selected .... What happened to maps, used to drive HGVall over Europe no such thing as a satmap back then, I do have a road angle with memory map, only really use it for tracking of road routes so can go back again.
Back in the days before satmap, used to look on map, and write down main towns and vilages in order on a pad, leave it where you can see it and you do not have to stop and look on the map. when you get to town/city/village, used to stop a taxi and follow him, most did not ask for payment, so a packet of fags or 2 if it was a long drive. so use eye's and mouth. look and ask. When going somewhere unfamiliar I also look at maps first - granted that is usually Google Maps - not had a hard copy road map in years.
I check the map to make my own decisions about how to get more or less to my destination, sometimes print out a few google maps directions as back up, or even jot down a few road numbers of on a post-it note to stick on the dash. That way I can choose the best route on the main roads. I also like to check Google Streetview as it helps to have an idea what the road layout will be like, hashings, keep left bollards, that sort of thing, and also what landmarks to look out for near where I need to be (pub, chippie, school etc). In my old job I used to visit schools and community centres a lot and Street View was brilliant for checking out what parking will be like around my destination, etc. So then after all that I use the sat nav on my phone to keep track of where I am, make sure I don't miss a turn etc. There is also Apple or Google maps on my phone to check for an alternative route if there is a problem etc. If we are out and about together, pootling around or laning we'll also have Memory Maps on the iPad - basically electronic copies of the paper ones, but with the added benefit of the GPS telling you where you are. One thing I noticed when moving to Germany is that in the UK I tended to plan long journeys by map using road names. I think it worked pretty well. However, when I first drove long distance here I soon realised the same technique wouldn't work, as all the roads have several names and what I read on the roadsigns was rarely what I had written down
I soon learned to navigate by town/city and road type. I love satnavs so much I want to marry them  Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Well technology does move forward at a rapid pace and it is difficult for 'normal' users to keep abreast with all the latest moves in technology.

One thing that people should be aware of is where they position sat navs/phones etc. Plonk your sat nav in the middle of the windscreen is obviously a big NO NO although you do see driving like that. Basically anything in the swept area of the windscreen is a no no. OK there is a boundary 10 mm and 40mm but for simplistic view easier to say nothing in the wiper zone. Anything put on dash etc which sticks up into the swept area of the windscreen could be construed as an obstruction to the drivers vision. Fair point, but having the screen near your road view means you can "multitask", whereas having a screen lower down makes you take your eyes off the road entirely - is there a law in the UK against having your satnav built into the floor?
Mine slides down for the TÜV anyway

National laws varies about things like sat navs.
In the UK it is legal for sat navs to tell you where speed cameras are. In Germany that is illegal and IIRC foreign sat navs should have speed camera location switched off. In Spain IIRC it is legal for the driver to hear the instruction but not to be able to see the map. The joys of travelling abroad. Brendan |

Just for fun, the law in Germany states:
“Dem Führer eines Kraftfahrzeugs ist es untersagt, ein technisches Gerät zu betreiben oder betriebsbereit mitzuführen, das dafür bestimmt ist, Verkehrsüberwachungsmaßnahmen anzuzeigen oder zu stören" ... or in other words that "the driver of a motorised vehicle may not operate a technical device that is specifically designed to display or disrupt traffic observation measures". The "official" penalty is a 75 Euro fine and 4 points on your license. However, even though it is frequently discussed on forums whether a satnav falls into this "technical device" category, there has never been a single case in Germany of prosecution for using a satnav with speed camera data built in, or even of a satnav being checked. So don't worry when you come to visit Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Very neat install Brendan! Looks factory fit. Well, probably better than factory fit! Did you have a specialist do the install? Or did you do it yourself?
