2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Aintree Green

Chequer fitting?

I got a 4 piece set of black bonnet and wing plating from the missus for Chrimbo. Does any one have any advice about fitting? Would you bolt in place straight onto paint or use clear silicon or similar as a gasket?

DON'T..... You will devalue your Defender and it will deform the panels whether fitted with pop rivets or correctly with stainless countersunk bolts. I took care with a new TD5 and there was bad corrosion going on under the alloy.. Dealers will not touch it in a trade in once 3 years old or so as they know the corrosion going on. And at £450 + painting for a bonnet you will have that to pay in the future. I just don't see the point as i never stood on mine. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Great points but unfortunately I'll spend more on surfboard and various other toy repairs if I can't stand on the bonnet. Its the lesser of two evils, I'm afraid. On the plus side I kept my last 110 for over 10 years and this one is headed the same way so resale is not an issue.

With the 'genuine article' from Land Rover the chequerplate is backed with a thin layer of high density foam-like material. Surely if you backed it or laminated it with something like that it would be better? Even possibly linoleum would suffice as all one would see would be the edge. If you purchased an 'end roll' of an inobtrusive colour it would be ideal! Just an idea to throw at you for consideration. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

You can buy self adhesive neoprene - I have used it for things and would be great.

Definitely put a backing material on it - it'll stop vibration wear as well as protect the paint.

You need to know what material it is made of - if aluminium then I'd rivnut it or bolt it in with countersunk bolts. You won't see bi-metallic corrosion then.

I'd be interested to know how strong the bonnet is with the plate on.

One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
+ New Defender 110 First Edition

Often overlooked when fitting is repair the holes!

Eg: drill, clean up, paint, dry wait, then fit Mike
