I was out last Friday with the group I belong to, ours is an offshoot of our local Land Rover club and eventually we get a contribution for fuel. The boys were off from school so they were with me and we started off with a nurse from a village south of Hereford to the hospital then the rest of the day ferrying a practice nurse on her rounds in the sticks about 20 miles from home. On the Friday there were over 30 "jobs" ranging frim a short in time ferrying a worker to or from hospital/doctors to longer winded jobs such as medical staff on their rounds and I know a couple of motors were doing meals on wheels. We have been on standby ever since and I only really get asked if they're getting stretched as if the weather's that bad I've got the boys with me but I don't miss out that much because the controllers think I'm sensible Shocked Rolling with laughter

I will always stop to help people who are in genuine need of help and have at least tried to help themselves. However after the last snowy period in the south I got thoroughly fed up with the way that idiot car drivers, who ventured out knowingly into snowy conditions without the slightest throught or preparation (no shovel, for example) would expect help from any passing 4x4 as though somehow it was their right, and I had an obligation to help them. It is also very tiresome that the same clueless motorists will completely block roads under conditions when it is clear that they won't be able to drive, and thus deprive the emergency services and 4x4 drivers of the use of the road.

In some ways I actually think the parallels between the recent floods and the snow are close. Most car drivers wouldn'd drive into 3' deep floodwater because they realise they are unlikely to get through. Yet the same drivers will drive into 1" of snow, even though they are as unlikely to get through.

I will however always help those in genuine need, or those in genuine danger whether or not they are criminally stupid! I would think twice about any recovery where there was a risk of further damage and woudl not do it without a written disclaimer from the other party, and woudl not undertake any recovery where there was a risk to other road users.

It is better to bottle out and live another day.

So some positive thoughts on 4x4 response then Thumbs Up

I understand a membership payment has been introduced on our local one, but apparently that's to help fund hiviz clothing etc for use when out which seems reasonable. (plus stickers probably)

I guess there are always going to be some groups where its a bit cliquey (not having the right wheels/tyres/lights/beard etc) but I think that's common in a lot of organisations, My wife tried to get involved in a local MG club and didn't get talked to as she had the wrong sort of bumpers - later model rather than 'classic'.

Sounds like some worthwhile assistance is given by them to help medical staff get the job done.

what annoys me, at marcus pointed out, is the guys that sit in their vehicles watching someone trying to get up a hill with 2 or so people helping them. if everyone that could got out and helped then it would all be over much sooner! Cheers

Tyre's are often their problem. They think having 4wd make it invincible but they've practically got slicks on as tyre's and can't work out for the life of them why they keep getting stuck. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

That is the same with any 4x4 regardless of make, as been said before it's usually down to driver experience - or lack of it.

In all your many years driving experience have you been behind the wheel of many Jap 4x4's? Steve.

I never said otherwise.. My 90 wasn't great with GG's on before the KM2's. It made it far more capable put it that way.

What's that meant to be insinuating?

On a different note whether you stop to help someone or not you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be some old (and young) misery's out there that you cannot please either way. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't Laughing Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Assist people or recover vehicles?

Personally I think the main thing is to ensure that people are safe. Once people are safe then in my opinion the main requirement of assisting people has been accomplished.

Recovering vehicles? Only ATTEMPT it if you feel it is within yours and your vehicles capabilities and the right equipment is available. Any doubts then do not even attempt it!

I belong to Hants and Berks 4x4 response and the main role we perform is a taxi service for important roles , since Friday I have ferried a Midwife , an A & E consultant and WRVS meals on wheels . No flashing lights or mask and cape just helping people do an important job.
£25 a year to belong and reimbursed at 40p mile for my trouble.
The team controllers have probably handled hundreds of calls since the snow fell and not everyone has been tasked but an effort is made to share out the jobs.

We are appreciated by almost everyone we help but shouldn't expect gratitude after all we should be grateful to the passengers we carry who play a vital part in society mostly for little pay. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

There was a guy in a FL2 that wouldn't go up the hill, his back wheels were no driving at all? i told him to book it in as the haldex units can fail and so can the control unit. I had a vw bora 4 motion and they run the same system.

I noticed a lot of bad tyres last night!

AS for landrover PR i'd like to say everyone was impressed with the 110 and we got loads of thankyous which m akes it worth doing.

Pretty much all our available members in your area were being tasked to patient, medical staff or police transport. Chances are they didn't stop to help as they were on their way to their next tasking.

4x4 Response isn't about pulling ill-prepared public up a hill so they can get stuck on the next one. We'll pull something out if the way if needed to ensure safety of others, but that's about it. Our primary role is logistics support to the emergency services. More than half the jibs I've done in the last four years have involved ferrying carloads f doctors and nurses to hospital or patients. I've only been tasked to on tow job and that was on Friday when I was driving for Dorset Police . A transit was in danger of sliding down a very steep hill (17% single track) so we towed it 15 yards to where it was no longer a hazard and able to set off under its own steam after a quick lesson in driving in snow.
:
I have a small magnetic amber britax bar in the boot (shows clear until lit) and have a spare grille with two strobes for when I'm asked to do escort work. On Friday I was asked to put a blue light on the roof as we were likely to be stopping in some tricky places and boy was I astonished at how many close calls we had when stopped at an accident! I swear those lights act as a magnet to every Prat in the area.

A long and interesting shift, and one I was glad to help with.

well after they'd been up the hill 2 or 3 times i guessed they weren't that busy.

And i am not claiming they were 4x4 response bods but they were clearly dolled up for the occasion with flashy grill lights and oversized hi viz coats!

i 100% support the good work of the 4x4 response guys and gals ferrying important things around in adverse weather.

anyway i can't commit to any real reliable service which was another factor. i think the Uk should enforce winter rules like they do on the continent now that we have this bad weather more regularly.
